The foolproof finishing system! Just wipe on with a clean cloth and you're ensured of professional quality results without brush marks. Stains dry to the touch in minutes. If you want a darker color, apply another coat of stain in only 6 hours. Once you're satisfied with the color, apply General Finishes's satin gel topcoat finish. Special formula repels dust between coats. No sanding needed between coats and no unpleasant smell.

Note: Coded as a flammable substance by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Can not be shipped by air or through the postal system

How To Apply the Oil Base Gel Stain

Applying the gel stain is a simpler process than traditional stains that require sanding between coats. Before you apply your stain however you should prep your piece to ensure the stain covers correctly.

  1. Clean the surface you plan to stain
  2. Sand the surface. The suggested grit is 120-150 grit, you want to make sure that any existing finish that might be peeling is removed so the stain applies to the actual project surface.
  3. Apply the gel stain liberally with either a cotton cloth, natural bristle brush or a poly foam brush. (Be sure to test a small area of your project to make sure it is the finish you want and that the application method you've chosen is working well for you.)
  4. Wipe off the gel stain going with the grain using a clean dry cotton cloth or high quality paper towels.
  5. Let it dry, between coats give you project a chance to dry. Drying time varies based on the size and nature of your project as well as the environment it's located in. Normally drying time ranges from 6 to 12 hours.
  6. Repeat Steps 3-5 IF you want more coverage or you want a deeper/richer finish.

Suggested Topcoat

Topcoat can be used as a sealer over paints and stains or as a clean finish. If you want to use a top coat the recommended topcoat is Oil Based Arm-R-Seal Urethane Topcoat (sold separately).

Really Nice, Even For Someone Who Hates Painting and Staining
Wonderful result with relatively little difficulty. I hate staining, but this made it pretty pleasant. I had two pieces- one pine, one red oak. The oak took it better. Tried a variety of application methods and found a small foam roller worked best for me. Tried wiping off after 20-30 minutes and reapplying to get the right tone, but in the end got better results by just leaving it on until dry, since I wanted a dark finish.

General Finishes Gel Stain
General Finishes Gel Stains are the best product to use when coloring 'blotch prone' woods such as pine or poplar or maple. I usually seal the wood with diluted gel topcoat .. then I apply a water based dye to the wood .. the stain it with gel stain and then apply a full strength finish for beautiful ... rich ...color.

General finishes Brown Mahogany gel stain
Have not used it yet, but tried it on a piece of Birch solid wood and got an excellent result. I think this gel stain is one of the best quality your money can buy. I will not use anything else in the future. I highly recommend this brand.

I just finished a project using General Finishes gel stain and the results were very good. This stain is a good compromise between being too fast to set (thick) and not thick enough to stay in place.

I am adding a section to the top of my oak cabinets. The new section will also be oak, but won't be finished like the old cabinets. What should I do to prevent the new section from looking different than the old after the gel stain has been applied?
Lorie B on Jan 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: First thing to do is follow the manufacturers instructions for applying the finish to the existing finish. Make sure to use steel wool to rough up the surface a can apply a sealer to the new wood so the new stain/paint wont soak into the new wood as much. My wife and i have 100 year old oak bead board in our kitchen we were trying to match finishes on. We also added some new oak bead board as well and used the same finish. More than one coat was needed for the new. This product does not give off a glossy finish after it dries so it's pretty easy to match to other woods. Also I recommend using a good quality brush if using this product as a "paint stain". We applied product like this not just staining and wiping off.
What is the coverage in sf of the helf pint size gel?
Donna B on Jul 21, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have stained an electric guitar and used about a tenth of the can. Depending on how dark you want the stain to get it should cover quite a bit
What if I don't like the color after staining it, how easy is it to remove and restain?
Maria S on Aug 11, 2017
We are debating between Brown Mahogany and Antique Walnut. I can't tell by pictures online just how red the mahogany is. Does anyone know if it has an actual red tint to it? We don't mind a hit of red, but don't want it to look too red.

General Finishes Gel Stain, Antique Walnut
BEST ANSWER: Any of the gel stains that I have used are pretty accurate. Please consider:
1) The wood that is being stained
2) Bare wood versus one that was previously finish and sealed.
3) The time lapse from application to actual rub finish (ie: the longer it stands the deeper the color finish)
I hope this is of help - good luck
can you use a HVLP spray system?
sonny on Jan 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. The product is quite thick and is to be applied by hand with a pad. It is designed to not run when applied to a vertical surface. A dye would be more appropriate for an HVLP application.
Will this go over white painted cabinets? If so, is just light sanding required first?
A shopper on Jul 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If you want to see the wood grain then yes you would need to completely sand. But it will be worth it cause this gel stain brown mahogany is beautiful and you need at least 2 coats to give it the rich beautiful color.
I refinished my bathroom with gel stain, is it recommended to use Arm-R-Seal as a topcoat?

General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Urethane Top Coat, Satin
Yes, you absolutely want to use the Arm-R-Seal as a topcoat. You'll want to choose the sheen (satin, semi-gloss, gloss, etc.) to determine how "shiny" you want the finish. I put 3 coats normally and it's very protective; it also really brings out the grain in the wood.
Can I use java gel stain on stairs the stairs is wood?
Ophie on Jul 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe as long as you let it dry thoroughly before you apply the top coat you will be fine.
Will painting on gel stain cover the poor results of using oil based stain on poplar wood?
Joyce C on Nov 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes I do believe it will. We installed poplar trim with this product painted on and turned out awesome! We also painted it over 100 year old wainscott and trim that had multiple layers of finish on it. We roughed up the wood with steel wool like the instructions say. End result was a very rich finish. Keep in mind though with painting it on you will have brush marks so get a high quality brush. Happy to answer any other questions and could also send some pics.
