Jet's JWDS-1020 drum sander is a compact, benchtop sander that can sand boards up to 20'' wide in just two passes. It accepts stock up to 3'' thick, packing a powerful 1HP motor and an infinitely variable feed rate control so you can adjust for varying material hardnesses. The self-cooling extruded aluminum sanding drum protects the wood from burning, while the patented dust hood funnels dust to the 4'' port. Adjusting the table to parallel is easy with just the turn of a dial, ensuring accuracy and smooth sanding results.

Features:

  • Heavy duty die-cast aluminum and steel body provides rigidity for consistent quality
  • Patented dust hood incorporates an integrated channel that directs dust to a 4" collection port
  • Parallelism adjust dial features a stop to quickly return the conveyor bed to a flat position
  • Infinitely variable-speed control allows the user to choose the optimal feed rate
  • Open-ended design allows for up to 20'' of sanding capacity with 2 passes
  • Extruded aluminum drum is designed to dissipate heat and protect wood from heat-damage
  • Redesigned conveyor system pulls the workpiece through the sander instead of pushing
  • Toolless abrasive take-up fasteners make changing abrasives quick and easy
  • Precision-flattened reinforced steel conveyor bed supports the boards passing under the sanding drum
  • Control system with integrated circuit breaker protects motor from over heating

I just use it for making cabinet styles and rails. I plane and joint rough lumber and sand smooth with drum sander. Works great

Very happy with this.
I am so glad I purchased this. It works great and makes sanding easy. I wanted one of these for awhile but am limited on my space, so this smaller one fits perfectly. Very well made.

Perfect for a small shop
This is a great little drum sander for a space-challenged shop. I bought this for a very small home-based shop and it does a nice job. I have a 16 jointer/planer, and an 18 inch band saw, so the 10 inch/20 inch capacity of this is perfect for my needs, especially since space is at a premium in my shop.

Pros for the JWDS 1020:
>> Small footprint
>> Light weight so you can easily store it away if you don't want to keep it on your bench top.
>> Easy adjustments
>> Excellent dust collection
>> Open end design allows wood as wide as 20 inches to be sanded.
>> Reasonably priced.
>>Good quality workmanship.

Cons for the 1020:
>> Slightly under powered: it trips an internal circuit if the depth of cut is a little too deep. (This is the sole reason I didn't give a 5 star review, and if I could have given it a 4 1/2 star review, I would have done so.)

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

solid built and a good price
Haven't actually used it yet, but it looks like it'll do what I want. Only complaint is that the drums weren't aligned with the converyor bed - not parallel. Not a difficult adjustment but not one I should have to make initially.

Gave one star because it arrived packaged very well.
The sander appeared fine when removed from box, however had several issues.
1. First problem was the cooling fin on main drum motor was rubbing on housing cover. I discovered this before turning on sander. I moved fin in about 3/32 of an inch and except for (red flag raised in my head) problem was solved.
2.When I turned on sander the main motor was fine but the smaller belt drive motor made a strange groaning sound. In addition to the noise the feed belt was never aligned at factory. I followed instructions provided to align and noticed screws that secure alignment were never tightened at factory.
3. In short, I called Jet wood tech support, and asked him to listened to the drive motor over the phone. The support tech said the sound was not normal, and that he could send me a new drive motor but suggested I return sander.
I returned sander.

I’m not saying I won’t buy another jet product, but I obviously received a factory lemon.

What is the distance between the bottom (where it rests on the bench) and the top of the conveyor belt (i.e. for purposes of building extension tables)?
Thomas B on Jun 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Mine sits 3 and an eighth. But it looks adjustable up or down an eighth
Is there a depth gage? How difficult is changing the paper?
John M on Mar 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes there is a depth gauge but I only Use it to get close the the thickness of the material I will be sanding. Interestingly enough, the handle adjusts the standard 1/16th inch per rotation but in the opposite direction as my planer. Changing abrasive strips was a little confusing/difficult at first, but once I figured it out is not difficult. Two hints. The fastening clip on the right side of the drum applies tension to the wrap. The wraps I have purchased have been 1/2-1” too long and I need to cut some off the end so the wrap will Not hit the bottom of the right hand clip and, therefore, not adequately apply tension the the abrasive. Don't squeeze the right hand clip, but push it towards the back of the machine to open it. That not only opens the clip but depresses it on the spring it is mounted on, that will spring back to the front when you release It and properly tension the wrap.
Weight ?
Daniel S on Feb 11, 2020
BEST ANSWER: specs say 82 lbs - that sounds correct because I could lift and put it in position with some difficulty.
Incidentally, I really love this. Don't use it everyday, of course, but for certain things it's idea. Much better than planer or a lot of manual sanding.
