Bocote Knife Scales

Though quite heavy, bocote machines beautifully, and its weight adds a substantial feel to your knife handles. It boasts striking grain—a yellowish brown backdrop interspersed with bold, nearly black stripes, sometimes with swirling patterns and eyes. With it's fine texture, high oil content and beautiful luster, bocote makes a standout knife blank to complement your best blades.

Knives for my Grandsons
The scales are identical and that was paramount to prevent bickering between my two grandsons as to whose knife is better. Patterns are great.

Easy to work with, great color
Very good wood, doesn't chip. Oily so easy to work with but can clog up files/rasps. Great color once it's sealed.

Enough for two knives
Just use a thin kerf saw blade and resaw each blank and you'll have plenty for two knives

I selected this wood because it has a bold and beautiful grain pattern, it's got good heft, a warm color balance, and it has great workability as well as it polishes nicely.

Can I do all the sanding and shaping with hand tools? I dont have any power sanding belts and such. Wood rasps ans files and jigs saw only.
David S on Oct 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I believe it to be the preferred method. When using power tools you run the risk of taking off too much material. It will take longer but you will have a better finished product you will be proud to show off.
