This do-it-yourself knife kit lets you create a high-quality custom knife without the need to forge, grind and heat-treat your own steel. Just add a pair of scales, or handles, in the material of your choice. The blade is made from 440C, a high-chromium stainless steel with an exceptional balance of hardness and corrosion resistance, and the drop-point blade shape is a favorite for both hunting and general-purpose use. Good Quality
Good quality product delivered. As this is my first build I encountered a few issues. 1. Measure, Measure, and Measure some more. I drilled before measuring the Fourth time and one pin hole is slightly larger then necessary. Finish the front of the scales before attaching as you WILL scratch the blade and that will add more time. Overall I will order another one.

BEST ANSWER: They fit fine. I trimmed with Dremel cut off disc then sanded with #100 the down to #220.
What kind of wood is shown in the description? It looks like a backbone with ribs.

BEST ANSWER: The scales in the picture are Pine Cone. The is a great video on YouTube "Making A Pine Cone Handled Knife". This is a great how to video if you'd like to make one similar to the one pictured. Hope this helps.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it does come sharp enough to cut a piece of paper but it's not razor sharp. but you have to put the final edge on it with a stone.

BEST ANSWER: I have made over 20 of the knives, light colored hard maple is an excellent choice. dark woods include walnut , wenge or iron wood, brown or red handles I used padauk and purpleheart a very decorative handle can be made with leopardwood My favorite wood for handles is purpleheart

BEST ANSWER: I don't know if you can purchase replacement pins from Rockler, but I have purchased brass rod stock that works fine for pins. You can get brass rod stock on-line or from almost any hardware or hobby store.
Can the spine be filed to create a design?

BEST ANSWER: 440C steel, which is used on the drop point knife blade you are questioning, is a hardened steel used in order that a knife can maintain an edge.
