Figured Claro Walnut Knife Scales

Figured claro walnut showcases the most varied grain and color of any walnut species. A hybrid often grown in California orchards, claro walnut was first popularized when woodworker George Nakashima used it to produce much of his boldly figured furniture. Like black walnut, claro walnut is very stable and easily worked. It is highly sought after for figured gunstocks, so a matching knife handle would be a welcome addition for any hunter.

Very usable knife scales
One was beautiful. The other sort of plain. Both will make a good looking carving knife.

Ok for the money
I ordered 3 sets of these and my blade is exactly 1.5" with at the handle. So, sanding the rough spots meant I had to sand metal too. The color is much more bland than pictured.

Are the Claro scales stabilized?
Blaine A on Oct 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Blaine,
The scales appeared to be kiln dried.
I have not noticed any warping or other problems since I got them. I have not used them for anything yet, but there have been no issues.
