nice scales
these aren't really black just very dark in color. however after working with them I think they will be very serviceable seeing they are so hard.

Wow
Got a good deal of sapwood in my blank, which actually turned out okay. This wood is hard as a diamond in an icestorm, but it is very forgiving.
Final product of a refurbish. Would've flipped the handle, but first time.

Much easier to work than I thought. Beautiful when finished. Very hard. Cut well on bandsaw. Hard to shape with sandpaper.

Are these scales stabilized?
Drew R on Jan 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, it's far too naturally oily a wood to accept the stabilization process.
Are there longer scales? I am trying to put a new handle on a butcher knife and the scales on here are all 5 in. The one on my butcher knife now is about 5 and a quarter.
Creeg on Dec 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Rockler sells milled 3/8 wood that is 2-3 inches wide and 24-36 inch long. If you can find s species you like, it is easy to make scales that are longer
