Great Maple Burl knife scales
These scales were stabilized with Cactus Juice then cut, shaped, sanded, and buffed with no oil or wax added.
Excellent scales, worth very penny. I have ordered several more sets. Thanks!
Stabilized Maple Burl from Rockler. No oil or wax, just sanded and buffed.

Small Hunter Knife
Works up well, but is sensitive to heat buildup when using higher speed equipment. Final finishing was 600, 1500 and Tung Oil. Very pleased with this product.

Maple burl scales
The maple burl scales I received with my drop point knife kit order were nicely figured. Maple burl is a harder wood to shape and sand, but should resist the bumps and dings while out hunting. These scales take on nice finish which should add to their durability.

Very Nice Burl - Unstabilized
Made a beautiful knife handle. The Rockler scales that I've seen are very hard but not stabilized. I picked mine out in the shop so I could get the grain pattern I wanted. Honestly though, there wasn't a bad choice on the shelf. Each side was a slightly different thickness. Both needed significant sanding to flatten them.
Tung oil left to cure. Then Tripoli buffing compound on the buffer.

Awesome look
The wood was a dream to work with and the end product was stunning. The wood "danced" in the sun and my father was very pleased with the look. The difference in the burl and the birds eye was slight though. Recommend cutting your own scales from a plank of burl/birds eye that is sold on this sight as well. Saves you money and you can pick the best grain/burl from the board.

Good to go!
These scales came out better than I had expected, as is often the case, maple looks pretty bland until you get some kind of finish on it. These scales were no exception. It would have been nice if there would have been a larger quantity of these scales in stock, but I'm happy with how these turned out.
These scales are reasonably priced, will buy again.

Nice scales
I received these scales with fast shipping and as advertised there was however some cracking within the wood but I was able to sand most of that out

Can I work this wood (Maple Burl) without power tools? I just have a jigsaw, files, and a Dremel tool. thanks
David A on Jun 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely! I use it for jewelry making, and shape and carve it with a Dremel, knife, chisels, and files. It is fairly hard, so detail work can be slower than with softer woods, but the end results are worth the effort. The grain is strikingly beautiful when finished.
