Lacewood displays an attractive pattern of rounded ''flakes'' that gives it the appearance of being wrapped in loose-knit lace.

Lacewood Pen Blank

Item #
56280
Rating:
96% of 100

Thanks to its broad medullary rays, Lacewood displays a very pronounced flecked pattern, especially in quartersawn sections. The color is a warm reddish brown with grey to light brown rays interlaced to make up the pattern that gives the wood its name. Texture is somewhat coarse. Working characteristics are quite good, and it stains and finishes well.

I make pens for low vision or blind veteran. The Lacewood when finished has little bumps on it so as they can pick it up and feel the barrel and know they have the pen they want.

Nice grain to the wood; inexpensive, and may make a less expensive pen kit look high end.

The price was right and the grain of the wood looked interesting.

What type of lacewood is this? I know there are a number of different species I am curious because I like to tell my customers where the wood is from
D A on Jul 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe this wood is the species panopsis, from South America. My favorite resource for identifying wood is the Wood Database. Based on their pictures, the blank I got seems to be panopsis. Check wood-database dot com and search for lacewood.
