Modern Open Weave Cane

Item #
80% of 100

Rattan cane is exceptionally durable, making it the best choice for heavy-duty uses like chair seats. Can be made flexible by soaking in water. Traditional Cane is made from the outer bark of the rattan palm-- a climbing vine that grows to the top of tropical forest canopies. Cane is also impervious to damp, humid conditions and may be stained (oil stains are best), painted or varnished.

Note: Minimum order of pre-woven caning is 12 lineal inches.

Prior to my Boxer puppy pushing his nose through the back of one of our dining room chairs, I had never attempted caning, let along replacing and refinishing an older chair but I must tell you the Modern Open Weave Cane material sold by Rockler was surprisingly easy to manage given some patience for the learning curve and easy to follow instructions. The hardest part was getting the old material out and getting a clean groove. The repair came out just great.

Staining Failed - Decription Misleading
Staining is very difficult and results were poor. Upon further research, it seems staining is NOT recommended. The description is misleading as it says the product can be stained. It should say to stain with extreme caution.I will have to pull it out and redo it.
Blotchy stain. The whole thing is sticky after 24 hours.

Do the holes tighten up and shrink when wetting the webbing??
Dawn M on Jun 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Natural cane is always installed wet. As it dries, the cane does stiffen. The holes, however, do not change. It's just that the caned seat, which is a bit floppy when wet, dries to a nice stiff seat.
How long and wide is the cane?
Amysue on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Modern Open Weave Cane comes in two widths, 18" and 24". As for the length, we can cut it in any length you would like. It is sold by the inch
