Rockler Picture-Hanging Keyhole Template

Hang pictures and other items easily and precisely with this slot cutting template. No measuring is required, just line up the template with the corners of your frame and rout - your slots will always be level. The two short slots are perfectly symmetrical so you can switch easily from left to right. The long slot increases your horizontal adjustability. Use with the 5/8" Short-Shank Guide Bushing (#38756, sold separately), specially designed for 1/4" template stock, and a 3/8" Hanging Slot Router Bit (#92024, sold separately). Use double-faced tape to secure template to workpiece. The narrow venting slots allow chips to escape.

Great product - highly recommend!
I have been using the keyhole template, along with the rockler router bushing and keyhole bit for almost four years, and I am grateful that it exists. I sell a variety of wooden signs online, and have put multiple keyhole slots in a few hundred signs with this setup. With a quality double-sided tape, it works perfectly everytime. I'm planning to buy another template so that I can build a keyhole slot jig, which will eliminate the need for tape. Double-sided tape works great, but when I'm putting three slots in a sign, and have 30 signs in a batch, I'm looking to streamline my process. You can't beat the look of a sign mounted flush to a wall either.

Keyhole guide picture hanging guide
Easy to use, I wish there was a slot for shorter keyholes but not that big of a deal. I like it specifically for odd shaped objects that I can't use with my router table.

Worked Perfectly for Cutting Keyholes
I also purchased the guide bushing and after adding some double sided tape to the back of the template, stuck it on an oddly shaped piece I wanted to hang. The guide bushing fit perfectly and the keyhole cut smoothly. Worked great on a few not square pieces which I couldn't use my router table for.

Definitely recommend if you are cutting several keyholes or want repetitive, straight cuts.

Absolutely Amazing
When I ordered a new keyhole bit to replace the one I had misplaced, I noticed this template and ordered one. Previously I had used all kinds of contraptions to put the keyhole in the right place, keep it straight, and stop at the right point, not to mention the plunge and hold aspect. I did one sample which was perfect, and the keyholes in the project were a total success. Using double faced tape avoids any clamps, and my projects don't usually have any place to place a clamp anyway. Great template. rpc

After battling use of my keyhole router bit with just my router fence, so essentially freehanding the keyholes and finding that no matter what I tried to do, every route had a flaw, I looked for a jig and asked around, and everyone swears by this fail-safe jig.

Is there a template for the 1/2 inch keyhole bit?
Don A on Jan 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Don, great question. I use the Rockler Keyhole Template as well as custom jigs/fixtures I make for specific circumstances. When the situation calls for a direct keyhole mount, the Rockler Keyhole Template is easy and fast. Simply afix the template with 2-sided tape and go to work. Practice first is always a good idea. Frequent or repetitive work, I go with a fixture.
How much weight will the keyhole carry? I want to hang a quilt hanger with a quilt and want to make sure it will hold.
Susan J on Jun 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm no expert, but I have used this method. I think the depth of the keyhole, the type of wood.(walnut ,pine, poplar, etc), and whether course or fine thread screws are used, all affect the amount of weight capacity. My general comment is that the keyhole is a fairly dependable method of hanging light to medium weight objects. Another criteria is the use of two or three keyholes on the one piece. you have to be precise in the placement of multiple keyholes. I have used this configuration and it supports significant weight. hope this helps.
? I just purchased the keyhole template , bushing and router but . But I can’t find any instructions on settings the proper depth for the bit. I’m just not sure on the proper depth. I have the 5/8 guide bushing 38756 and bit 92024 for it. Thank You
Doug on Jan 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Kind of depends on the stock you are using and how you are hanging the item.

You need to decide how much material you want/need so that the material between
the slot and the surface of the wood is strong enough to bear the weight of whatever
is being hung. The space between the top of the broad part of the cutting head and the bottom of the
bushing sets the thickness of the material above the slot that you cut.

You want the broad part to plunge down creating the insertion point for the hanging screw, and then
it cuts a "T" shaped slot to hang from.
Will a key hole slot work well with signs made with the state park kits?
larry e on Aug 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The thickness of the board is the most important question here. If your keyhole is 3/4 total and your board is 1" you can't go too far with your lettering kit. Practice on spare wood to find the good match keeping in mind the keyhole depth and strength is the most important consideration.
i purchased the picturehanging keyhole template and have the 1/2" 1/4" shank slot bit will this work with the template i bought or do i need the 3/8" bit ?
Stephen on Aug 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No the 1/2" 1/4" bit will work. Thats what I use. It works fine.
Can I use this keyhole template with my Dremel Plunge Attachment? If so, do I still need to purchase the matching Shank Guide?
