A fold down bed mechanism is perfect for guests, small rooms and apartments. This finely engineered hardware is counterbalanced for smooth operation without binding or overextending. Mechanism uses a sophisticated piston lift system rather than old-fashioned springs that can snap back. Beds are held securely closed, and open gently for added safety. Steel pivot pin and bracket points install easily without adjustments. Includes instructions for basic cabinet construction and instructional DVD. Woodworking Experience:
The hardware and instructions worked great! We put the side ways bed above a sofa and built a cabinet below for storing folding chairs and tables . It is wonderful!!! Our contractor, Timeless Marble and Tile were able to modify what was needed to elevate and support the bed with a 4x6 header and a cable for the corner. It turned out great and the hardware provides and smooth open and close at just the perfect speed and lift control.

Horizontal Murphy bed kit
I was extremely impressed with the service I received from Rockler. Furthermore, the plans were excellent, and I constructed the bed in 1 week. Everything was just as they said. I am a contractor, so I have built many things before, but I was impressed with the way it went together and now it is a beautiful piece of furniture in my guest bedroom. I constructed it from shop grade finished oak ply and poplar. Thank you Rockler!

I really enjoyed building this bed!...
I really enjoyed building this bed! This project went very smoothly and it has a lot to do with the Create-A-Bed Hardware Kit. The full length DVD and instruction booklets were perfect. The layout diagrams and measurments in the booklets were spot on! To describe this project in a few words, This bed is very cool!

This kit sat in the closet...
This kit sat in the closet for 2 years before I started building it. Finally, it's completed! The instructions and DVD are very thorough and easy to read. Just follow the plan step by step and it works out. It's fairly forgiving of slight measurement errors as well except in the hardware installation part. There is a fair amount of extra wood so plan on building shelves or something with the leftover. One sheet of 1/4 inch would do the trick as the other comment said. Some of the mattress supports can be cut from the scrap plywood as well as verified by my call to the company to ask that. Overall, it's a good plan and good product.

What is the weight limit for the horizontal queen sized frame?
Holly on Jun 28, 2015
I need to move the Murphy bed. What measures do I need to take when removing the piston lift system?
Marvin on Aug 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You need to be careful, the pistons are very strong. Follow the reverse directions from the install. With the bed in its folded up position (not in use position) remove the screws on the top holding it to the wall. Gently slide it away from the wall far enough to reach the top position of the piston (furthest away from the floor) and remove the piston from the bed frame at that point on both sides. Now you can carefully lower the bed compartment or the entire bed if you have help which I would recommend. This is pretty easy but I would be careful, these things are heavy and the pistons are very strong, if you aren't careful or try this alone it would be easy to get hurt. Get help and don't remove the pistons while the bed is in its lowered position under any circumstances or unscrew the bed from the wall while in the lowered position.
Can you make a Cal King bed with the he queen kit if you adjust the cabinet size?
J B on Mar 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You should buy the king kit. The springs are not strong enough to compensate for the heavier mattress.

William E on Jan 17, 2017
On a Horizontal bed can you adjust the height to accommodate a sofa by extending the leg length and raising the piston height?
Sttonk98 on Mar 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: To answer his question, I will give a few measurements. The sofas that I have access to measure 16 to 17 inches from the floor to the top of the seating area. The same measurement, from floor to the top of the mattress on an open "Side Mount Murphy Bed, can vary depending on the thickness of the mattress. My bed has a 9 inch thick mattress, and the measurement from floor to the top is 18 1/2 inches. If I used a mattress that was only 6 to 7 inches thick, the measurement from floor to the top would be between 16 to 17 inches. I hope this responds to John's question. I would also recommend that he not attempt to adjust the leg length, unless he also extends the length of the side panels on the unit. To extend the leg length only, will create an unbalanced condition. That unbalanced condition may cause the bed to close up on a small occupant.
What is the difference in hardware provided between the standard full size kit and the deluxe full size kit?
Nhschreiner on Mar 19, 2018
can I adjust these parts to build a longer bed for a 7' tall boy?
Peter P on Jul 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would check for mattresses that are available, these plans were drawn for a 75" length full size mattress. There are extra tall mattresses available at 84" in a full size. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer to confirm the lift mechanism will handle the additional weight. If they say it will extend all horizontal measurements accordingly. It's a great project and works perfectly, enjoy.
We want to use foam mattresses as innesprung are too heavy for children to tuck sheets and blankets in. As long as the beds are anchored to the floor when open do we need to use the heavy innessprung bases?
Lucy99 on Jan 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Most memory foam sold as a mattress for adults is going to be about as heavy as an innerspring mattress. A simple sheet of lightweight foam would work but would give minimum support. Of course, kids can sleep on anything so this might work for you. Just don't try it without anchoring the folding section down. My Tuft&Needle memory foam mattress is great and holds the bed down without anchoring.
For the full horizontal mount it says the cabinet is 79"wide overall. How wide is the panel that pulls down?
Tim C on Jan 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The cabinet is 79" wide, 46" tall, and 16" deep. The panel that pulls down is 77" wide and 40 3/4" tall. the 77" width allows for two 3/4" side boards for the cabinet, plus an allowance of 1/4" on each side for clearance. There is a space of 2 1/2" at the bottom of the panel. This allows for adequate clearance when dropping the bed into the sleep position. The bed frame that fits on the inside of the panel is 76 1/2" x 40 1/2" x 6". This holds the twin size mattress. When the bed is down, in the sleep position, it pertrudes 42 3/4" into the room from the wall.

My bed is too heavy for me to lift. What do you suggest? Can the piston be adjusted?
Rosa K on Jul 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Our bed was ridiculously heavy before we attached the mechanisms. However after the bed was completed and the mattress was installed we did not have a problem with that. Double check the pistons are mounted correctly. I am unsure about adjusting the pistons so be sure to thoroughly review the CD's that came with your parts. Sorry I could not be of more assistance. Oh...perhaps a lighter mattress would make a difference. Ours was actually to light (a sleep number) so we added additional weight to the bed. Good Luck
I noticed that the only difference between this and deluxe seems to be the fold out tube. Without that, how does the standard version sit when folded out... Flat on the ground?
Vincent V on Jan 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Look carefully at the parts supplied. There are 2 latches that hold the bed in the vertical position when not in use. To disengage these latches there is a string that attaches to a piece of wood that is then attached to the front of the bed with spring loaded hinges. To lower the bed you lift up on these pieces of wood to disengage the latches and the wood pieces become the legs for the bed.
I have a Queen size Vertical Murphy bed kit that I need to convert to a Horizontal bed. Will the lifts work? I can figure out all the necessary dimensions to build the cabinet
Rick on Dec 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I do not think so (don't know for sure) but the balance point will be different. therefore the bed will not go up or go down has designed.
How small can the depth of the cabinet be?"
Seth R on Dec 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: 15 7/8" is as small as it can be for the twin ben. They have made it very compact and not a lot of "wiggle" room. The problem with going slimmer is you will not have enough room for bed to pivot. Also, the customer service department with create a bed is fantastic and easy to work with for any customizing you want to do.
What is the measure of the extended piston for an horizontal bed system?
Sair C on Dec 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The overall length of the extended piston is 27 7/8 and the post receivers are 27 inches center to center. They come fully extended and are impossible to compress by hand. I have compressed them with a Messy clamp in a pinch. The hardware must be mounted very carefully to the manufacturers dimensions to fit the pistons on.
What supports the mattress?
Laura G on Apr 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The mattress is supported on a frame of 1 x 2 lumber covered by 1/4" plywood. It's very sturdy.
Have a murphy bed with Rocker hardware 1 of the string catches is broken can I buy a pair of catches only not the whole kit?

Can the hardware be used on the top bunk of a bunk bed without any other support or is it necessary to have legs/ladder support the front? This would be using the side mount hardware.
Ryan S on Aug 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I made a bunk bed some years ago that the Murphy bed has now replaced. As a mechanical engineer, I would not consider just overhanging the Murphy Bed without support in front. I think you need a stop of some sort when the bed is deployed.
what is the gap needed between the casing and the bed frame for the pistons?
A shopper on May 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Aprox. 3/8" on each side. Piston mounts to inside of bed frame.
Has anyone extended the horizontal Murphy bed legs? My bed will be mounted in a van and must necessarily be at least 22” off the floor when in the down position to clear the wells and other structures.
NickO on Mar 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Having built a queen horizontal using a Rockler kit, I see no reason the legs could not be easily extended to accommodate your need. If I were doing it, I would consider embedding a small magnets in the 'floor end' of the leg and, of course, in the face to line up with the leg when stowed, to avoid vibration under way. And with longer legs you might want to consider a way to 'fix' the legs to the floor (when open) so the legs cannot easily be knocked/kicked out of place. The leg hinges, though reasonably sturdy for the intended design, will somewhat easily be bent/damaged with the longer 22" lever arm. Two or three small magnets in the leg-end and the floor would be helpful IMO. (You might guess that I am a fen of magnets.). You'll need to be sure, of course, that the camper wall height can accommodate being placed approx 18" higher than would be necessary with shorter (approx 4" from feeble memory).
Is there any difference in the piston for the Deluxe set vs the standard? Is the 50.00$ difference the cost of the legs?
chris g on Mar 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We got the deluxe and it really works well, my husband's felt that it was better to pay little more because we had a gueen vertical which is heavy for pistons. Good luck
Can this product be used to make a craft table that would sit about 34 inches off the floor?
Charlie B on Dec 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I used this kit for a similar purpose; you can use the included layout for the hinges and struts, but vary the overall height and table size to your needs. You may have to swap out the gas struts for higher or lower rated ones, depending on how heavy your table ends up being compared to the weight they were designed for. Hope this helps.
I bought the deluxe side mount Queen murphy bed hardware kit. Do I need mattress supports & where do I find them to buy?
Diane L on Apr 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Mattress supports (elastic bands) are included in the kit. They are secured to the 4 corners of the mattress platform. Some trimming of the elastic may be required.
will the size kit a king size mattress?
Thomas A on Feb 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Currently there is no King-sized Murphy Bed hardware kit.
What size mattress fits on this horizontal queen

Glenn on Dec 11, 2017

In the open, unfolded position, what is the "height" of the space between the floor and the bottom of the extended bed platform...what is that clearance?
Kathleen on Nov 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The "bottom" of the bed - the bed face panel assembly - is seven inches off the floor. The bottom of your MATTRESS will be 9 1/2 inches off the floor.
what is the fold down mechanism to use to build a bunk bed, what is the one the i have to buy to make one?
MOUNTAINTRADE on Aug 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately, Rockler does not carry a fold down mechanism for a bunk bed style of design.
Having never done such a project - is there a detailed materials list to take to my local lumber store?
Robyn P on Jul 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is a detailed materials list contained with the instructions. Briefly, it consists of four 3/4" plywood sheets (I used oak, about $50 per sheet) and two 1/4" sheets (about $20 each), plus miscellaneous screws, nails, adhesive, glue, etc. I would budget about $350 for materials. You will also need a very flat assembly table (I used another sheet of plywood across two saw horses). There are also some tools needed, also listed in the instructions. I would add countersink drill bits to this list.

If you are unsure about your ability to accurately cut large, heavy plywood sheets, ask at the home center or lumber yard where you buy the materials if they can cut the pieces for you. Most will do this at a nominal charge, saving you the stress and possible waste or expensive material. Be sure and take the instructions with you so you get all the necessary supplies at one time. Good luck.
We want bunk beds would the ladder at the front be sufficient support ? Or does anyone know of another plan using this hardware which appears to be the best.
Lucy99 on Nov 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Lucy99,. I built Murphy bunks using this hardware. I used nylon coated steel cables to support the bed when it was open. They are available on McMaster Carr website, cut to length with lanyards on each end for attachment. hope this helps.
