Sorby Sandmaster

An extremely handy addition to any turner's armory, the Sandmaster is used in conjunction with a lathe to put a fine finish on turned pieces. It eliminates the unsightly lines often associated with traditional hand sanding.

As the disc is spinning it also reduces the clogging of the abrasive. The Sandmaster comes complete with a hook-and-loop covered 2" sponge pad which allows for the easy changing of abrasive discs. A variety of grits - from 60 - 400 - of aluminum oxide disc can then be quickly attached.

The adjustable head which runs on a durable phosphor bronze bushing lets the turner reach even the more inaccessible spots. As an optional extra, a 3" head and discs can be easily fitted for greater efficiency. The Sandmaster becomes an even more versatile tool when the head is removed and replaced by a pigtail mandrel and goblet or bowl mop. Made of fine grade cotton these mops are an ideal medium for buffing waxes and other finishes.

Sandmaster: great for sanding lathe projects
Great for sanding bowls
The angle can be adjusted and the pad can be made to spin with the bowl or remain stationery for more aggressive sanding.

Ingenious concept powered by the lathe motor. Accepts other discs designed for hook & loop fixation. Angle adjustment mechanism is firm. It is necessary to lubricate the shaft, and I would use T-9 Boeshield for its dry film qualities.

careful it runs only on the turning of the lathe and can get caught going the wrong way if you cross the center

Sanding inside of bowls.
Does this contain bearings?
Goss on Jan 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No bearings, has a brass sleeve that the stem runs through. Good sander for finishing projects, not real aggressive. Sleeve does need to be cleaned and lubricated occasionally, I used WD40 and a rag to clean it out and to lubricate. Hope that helps.
