Is there an MT #1 pen starter kit?
Kerflop on Oct 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I purchased this kit a few months ago. I found it to be a great starter point for me being I had never turned a pen before. I did purchase a mandrel saver with the kit and have loved the results I have got from the kit. The best part of this kit IMO is the tool to square up the blanks after gluing in the tubes. It comes with several different sizes to accommodate the different sized pen kits out there. It really helps keeping things square.
There is a lot to turning different sizes and types of pens. This kit was a great stepping off point into the rabbit hole wood turning eventually becomes. The blanks in the kit were great too.
Do I need a lathe?
Grant B on May 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yup, you definitely need a lathe (I suppose you could rig up a drill but I wouldn’t bother trying, probably more frustrating than fulfilling)
Is it worth the money?
Chad T on Sep 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This kit is definitely worth it. I had never thought about turning a pen, but saw this kit and gave it a try. I’m hooked. I have now turned several pens, a seam ripper, and a magnetic pickup tool. I know you will enjoy this starter kit.
does this kit work with any lathe?
Bryan D on Oct 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This kit will work on any lathe as long as you pick the mandrel that fits your lathe.
Your lathe, this kit plus sand paper and the finish of your choice is all you need.
Is there a MT1 option of this kit?
Emmett N. on Apr 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: As for as I know, there is no MT1 option; however, I’m sure you can get a MT1 mandrel separate from the kit!
Do you need more than one mandrel size for making different pens?
Barbara R on Oct 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You only need 1 mandrel, but it is the bushings that allow you to make different pen kits.
What is the brass screwed coupler with the plastic sleeves for?
Larry L on Dec 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe the coupler is used to “shorten” the length of the mandrel so you need fewer bushings to hold the pen blank. It is like a plumbing compression fitting.
What is the compression fitting that comes with the mandrel for?
Doug C on Mar 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: When loading the pen blanks (with the brass tubes glued in), they may not take up all the space on the mandrel. The compression fitting allows you to “shorten” the mandrel to fit the blanks on and still lock down the knob.
Thought this kit came with some directions. Just bought the beginners pen turning kit (from local store), but where do I find the directions?
Wally G on Jun 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Instructions for Rockler pen kits are available in the pen package as well as on the Rockler web page under "Technical Downloads" for each pen style.
#MT2?
Anderson T on Jun 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, The mandrel in this kit is Morse Taper 2.
