pen starter kit
Following a 36 hour beginning woodturning beginners class, during which we made a pen, I wanted to perfect that skill and so I ordered this kit. I am very pleased with it, I have now turned 7 pens and I'm improving each time in time required and skills.

ROCKLER PEN TURNING KIT
I loved buying the pen turning kit from Rockler. I looked else where but no one offered what Rockler offered . I thought about just getting the different materials and turning tools separate but when with the whole kit! I recommend doing this! You get everything you need to turn 3 pens. I did mess up my 2nd one so I was happy to have a 3rd. Now be sure to watch videos on beginner pen turning on YouTube to get a feel for how each pen style is turned these videos really help teach you how to use the tools, material etc. happy turning ! It’s an awesome kit ! beware I didn’t see any instructions in the kit. Which I don’t know if I needed them , however they could be helpful , I didn’t think to look to see if any instructions were in there all and all a perfect kit to start out with

Is there an MT #1 pen starter kit?
Kerflop on Oct 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I purchased this kit a few months ago. I found it to be a great starter point for me being I had never turned a pen before. I did purchase a mandrel saver with the kit and have loved the results I have got from the kit. The best part of this kit IMO is the tool to square up the blanks after gluing in the tubes. It comes with several different sizes to accommodate the different sized pen kits out there. It really helps keeping things square.
There is a lot to turning different sizes and types of pens. This kit was a great stepping off point into the rabbit hole wood turning eventually becomes. The blanks in the kit were great too.
Do I need a lathe?
Grant B on May 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yup, you definitely need a lathe (I suppose you could rig up a drill but I wouldn’t bother trying, probably more frustrating than fulfilling)
Is it worth the money?
Chad T on Sep 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This kit is definitely worth it. I had never thought about turning a pen, but saw this kit and gave it a try. I’m hooked. I have now turned several pens, a seam ripper, and a magnetic pickup tool. I know you will enjoy this starter kit.
does this kit work with any lathe?
Bryan D on Oct 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This kit will work on any lathe as long as you pick the mandrel that fits your lathe.
Your lathe, this kit plus sand paper and the finish of your choice is all you need.
Is there a MT1 option of this kit?
Emmett N. on Apr 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: As for as I know, there is no MT1 option; however, I’m sure you can get a MT1 mandrel separate from the kit!
What is the compression fitting that comes with the mandrel for?
Doug C on Mar 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Good question, I didn’t know at 1st but I found out later that you place in on the turning mandrel so when you are only turning one blank. As you know the mandrel is long and once you place two blanks it pretty much tightens down , well if you only want to turn one blank . That compression fitting take up the slack that is there to only being one blank on the mandrel hope this helps
Do you need more than one mandrel size for making different pens?
Barbara R on Oct 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You only need 1 mandrel, but it is the bushings that allow you to make different pen kits.
How does a person have the finished pen engraved?
Edmund M on Mar 21, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Find someone with an laser is the only way that I have seen
What is the brass screwed coupler with the plastic sleeves for?
Larry L on Dec 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe the coupler is used to “shorten” the length of the mandrel so you need fewer bushings to hold the pen blank. It is like a plumbing compression fitting.
Thought this kit came with some directions. Just bought the beginners pen turning kit (from local store), but where do I find the directions?
Wally G on Jun 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Instructions for Rockler pen kits are available in the pen package as well as on the Rockler web page under "Technical Downloads" for each pen style.
#MT2?
Anderson T on Jun 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, The mandrel in this kit is Morse Taper 2.
