Rating:
90% of 100

Tried and True Original Wood Finish is a premium oil finish made with traditional varnish-making techniques and 100% natural, plant-derived ingredients. It provides a beautiful, natural sheen that allows the grain of the wood to shine through, yet gives plenty of protection for wood surfaces. It is safe for use with cutting boards and children's toys, and is FDA approved as non-toxic and nonallergenic. Indoor use only.

Features:

  • Made from highly refined, highly polymerized Linseed Oil and pure Beeswax
  • 100% solids—no solvents or heavy metal driers
  • Adapted from a Shaker finish and English Arts and Crafts technique
  • Finished surface has an ''antique'' sheen that shines without appearing glossy
  • May be applied to revive any existing finish
  • Gets harder and more durable as it ages

Directions for Use:

  • Apply thin coats. It is almost impossible to use too little
  • Allow the finish to sit on the surface for about 1 hour
  • Wipe down and buff with a soft, clean cloth to desired sheen
  • Allow at least 24 hours between coats
  • Consult the label for instructions on disposal of wiping cloths
  • Two coats is usually sufficient on trimwork, windows and doors. Furniture should have three coats
  • Original Wood Finish will increase durability after 2 coats, but it will not increase in gloss
  • Buff with a soft clean cloth to maintain the shine

Tried and True wood finish
I'm using the Tried and True wood finish on my work benches. I applied the product with a foam brush without any problem. The finish takes some time to dry. I like the fact I can put another coat on the benches after several months without sanding down the previous coat.

Great Environmentally Friendly Product
Application process is a bit lengthy. The finish is somewhere just short of a satin, but it really brings out the character of the wood. Really good application videos on the tried and true website. Great for items that aren't heavy use. I like it because I can do it inside, and its safe for the kiddos.

Amazing Finish
Used this on a pine slab coffee table and it the finish turned out amazing. Follow their directions and watch their videos, apply very thin coats! It feels great to use a natural product.

Good product!
I was looking for pure beeswax, but was convinced by the sales person that this semi-liquid form was better for my project. And it was. I was using this as a sealer for zinc countertops. It will need to be used occasionally and was easy to apply, polish and is a nice, unobtrusive, food safe finish.

I have used the original Tried...
I have used the original Tried and Trued on several projects with great results. I have become interested in more natural, old-time wood coloring/finishes, and have used Tried and True with fumed oak, nitric acid/heat treated poplar, sodium hydroxide treated cherry, bare pine, and as a top finish over milk paint. In every case it was easy to apply, and with several thin coats, gave me good control over the depth of the finish. All this in a non-toxic formula. The trade off was time. This is not a finish for the impatient. In general I got a mellow, rich look that has held up well. I recommend it with only one warning - take the application and temperature directions very seriously, or you will end up with a slow drying, tacky mess. If you're in a hurry, use another product. If you can relax and enjoy watching the finish build with each (thin) coat, this stuff is great.

Disappointed
I turned and sanded a wood bowl to 320 grit. I applied 2 coats of sanding sealer and then applied Tried and True. Upon wiping the excess off after 60 minutes via the lathe running I have a bowl that is blotchy and horrible looking. I think I will need to resand the entire bowl and try a different finish. Did I do something incorrectly?

BEST ANSWER: usually durability is an issue on finishes for table tops . polyurethane in a semi gloss will be durable and if you want a mat finish hit it with some steel wool one it is dry
Can this be buffed to more of a shine if desired ?
Keith M on May 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It can but the shine doesn’t last for me. I put about 3 coats on my cheese boards. I wait a day in between coats and buff it with 0000 steel wool. I find that it soaks in after a week or 2 and I need to really.
Can this product be used over acrylic painted wood?
Mike S on May 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is a Linseed oil \ Beeswax based product. To get the best finish it should be used on bare wood. I do not think it would dry on a acrylic painted item. If you want to put a shine on acrylic painted wood use a water based polyurathane product. Works very good and protects it indoors or outside.
