Purchasing the basswood rails, stiles and louvers simplifies the project as well.
I would recommend the 3 1/2 moveable louver with hidden control arm shutter jig and hardware. It makes my shutter projects easy to build.

Woodworking Experience:
Good jig for shutter makers.
I’ve made a set of 4 shutters for one window using this jig. I’m really pleased with the results. I’ve also used other Rockler parts for other irregular shutters. I wouldn’t have embarked on this journey without the help of Rockler.
4 shutters made using Rockler calculator & jigs, semicircle made with Rockler 3-1/2” shutter stock.

Movable louver shutter jig and hardware
Easy, fast and worth every dollar. Making shutters with the Rockler jig is a dream and is a valuable addition to the workshop not to add the valuable shutters you can add to your home.

Works Great
This shutter jig is a wonderful tool, I priced custom shutters and saved thousands, I bought the shaper bits to make my own louver blades and rails, I matched them up to the wood I currently installed in the house. Could not be happier with my purchase.

Great Jig and hardware to make beautiful shutters
My wife and I bought a new house this fall and she wanted plantation shutters. After I saw the price quote from a local shop I was stunned and luckily found Rockler's jigs, hardware, and lineal basswood lumber. So far I've made 10 shutters for our house and they have come out wonderfully. I'm rather new to finer woodworking, I didn't use the router beading bit to dress up the rails/stiles, but I stained and varnished each piece of the shutters. Thanks to Rockler's Design wizard it'll quickly help you design your shutter, build a supply list of what you'll need to order to assemble, and the fun part, the diagram of the cut list of what will be needed to be done on your table saw and router (I did all my work on the table saw).

Overall Great simple Jig
Very easy to use perfect jig for making shutters. I am a trim carpenter by trade but this jig makes creating these a snap. I bought the jig to take the guesswork out and make these shutters more rapid. I can very easily build, sand, and paint one coat 2 sets on a sunday. One jig you do not need is the 45143 hidden control jig. This shutter jig includes this already. Great product!

Woodworking Experience:
Nice jig but I'm not going to make my own shutters anymore...
This is a fairly expensive way to get shutters. After buying all of the wood and hardware (but excluding tools and jigs), it'll cost me $93 to build a single shutter I can buy online (all same specs and pre-primed basswood) for $67 and the pre-done one includes z-molding for mounting.

This seems like git would be a fun project but it's going to cost me 50% more and I'll have to do all of the work!

Anyone want to buy a Rockler shutter jig system (2-1/2" and 3-1/2" louvers) and stile router bit, brand new? Lol.

Very Satisfied
I bought this Jig kit, along with the Hidden Control Arm Jig kit. I would have given it 5 stars if both of these kits were combined.

I changed up the end plate as I made my shutters 1/2" thick, so I made a new end plate. I used the Hidden control arm end plate to mark the location of the pilot hose and drilled that into my new end plate.

Beyond that it worked great and was well worth the price.

Woodworking Experience:
Works well
The hidden control arm works a lot better than the traditional wooden control arm in front. They're equally easy to build, but the hidden control arm is a much more robust way to move the louvers than the front control arm. The front arm tends to come out of the holes in the front of the louvers, while the hidden arms have a much better way to fasten the arm to the louvers.
The only part of building these shutters that has a fairly steep learning curve is making the louvers. Using the router bit calls for practice. I ended up using two pusher sticks, one on the top to keep the blank from moving up, and one on the front about midway up - on the section that remains flat - to hold the blank against the fence on the router table.
So far I've made 8 of these, starting with an 8/4 piece of basswood, resawing a half inch off the top for the louvers, and cutting the rest from the remaining stock. With the exception of the louvers, it's all pretty simple.

why can you not build a shutter wider than 24"?

BEST ANSWER: Call rocker they can plug in the dimensions and send you the plans. I made several with 29 inch louvers they work fine no sagging
I am in the painting process. Should I paint the shutters with the control arm mounted or paint the shutters first and then mount the control arm?
Vicente G on May 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Mine has the hidden control arm behind the slats, but even if you have the front control arm, I'd mount the arm after paint as you don't want paint on the Brad's which pivot the hidden control arm or on the clips with a front control arm. If you have a front control arm, it'll also be hard to paint the back side of mounted already
Do you have plans for making Plantation Shutter frames?
Paul S on Sep 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I just used Rockler's design wizard and adjusted the dimensions to fit my windows. Simple as using the stile/rail sizes in lengths for my stuff.
Since the louvers are typically 3/8" thick, why are the stiles and rails figured at 1 1/8" and can 3/4" stock work instead?
Richard F on Nov 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I used 3/4" stock and it worked perfectly. I made the frames out of Sapele (mahogany) and stained the slats to match. I am very pleased with the results

I have a 104" wide opening containing three windows. There is nothing to mount the shutter to for the middle window - any suggestions?

Is it true I don't need the extra hidden controll arm jig? I'll be quite upset paying extra shipping on an item i will just return
Troy M on Oct 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Troy, if you plan on using a hidden control arm you will need to purchase the separate hidden control arm jig. The jig that comes with the kit is only for the standard front control arm.
Is there a dowel jig for attaching the bottom and top rails to the stiles?

Do you have plans for sliding glass doors?

Sorry you may want to call rockler and ask them.
I want to make flat shutter slats as opposed to the "leaf-shaped" profile. Each slat would then be overlapped and recessed into the above and below slats (making sense?). I know the traditional control arm would not work with this design, but would the hidden control arm still work?
Justin L on Dec 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure if I truly understand what you are trying to achieve, but you might take a look at The New Yankee Workshop's Norm Abrams shutter design plan and video. (For the record, I am NOT in any way connected to the NYW. However, I have built several pieces based on their designs and plans.) On the internet, search on newyankeeworkshop. Then, click on the NYW link to Plans & Videos, then under "shop our store" click on the menu item Plans & Videos. Then, in the search box type "plantation shutters" and then click on the search button. The first item on the following list shows a link to the Plantation Shutters plan & video. I remember watching Norm make these shutters several years ago on his (then) weekly New Yankee Workshop show on PBS. Norm Abrams' solution for this type of shutter looked pretty slick. (The New Yankee Workshop is no longer shown on PBS.)

why basswood? Can't I use poplar, walnut,etc.?
bill h on Feb 1, 2016

For four shutter window, when measuring the gaps between shutters is it five 1/8" gaps or three?
Paul S on Sep 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: If hinging two on one side and two on the other, I would figure 1/16 inch for the middle hinges if you are not mortising them in because that is how thick non-mortise hinges are. I hope that helps.
I’m making frames for each shutter to sit in.
How much clearance do I need around the shutter? I’m figuring about 1/16” ought to do it. Is that about right?
OutdoorCook on Sep 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I believe that you can download plans from the website that gives the exact measurements. I bought the product but never finished building them due to health reasons.
I have three large South facing triangular window and want to make shutters for it. Can you help me with that situation?
AstroBob on Jul 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I made several movable shutters using the hidden control arm. A triangle window could be made using the exposed front mounted control arm I think. The real challenge is making the louver pivots work in a slanted frame. Good luck!
I have a few question? I am building 6 shutter panels that are 94'' high,18'' wide, 1 1/8''thick. 3 together as a trifold design. so that means I need a middle rail. each rail section is approx. 40''. First, if I choose to go with a hidden control arm, and the mechanism is about 56'' long, I lose part of the control arm as waste. can I overlap the control arm on the other louver section so I don't waste material? and will it bind up or work smoothly? Second, if I choose to go with the movable bar control, will the louverpanels lay flat enough against each other to save space and look good? or will they not lay flat?
Lastly, where these panels are only 18'' wide, if I use top and bottom rail only, at 4'' or 5'' wide would that be sufficient enough to support that height which would eliminate the control arm issue altogether? Thanks so much
Jay S on Apr 14, 2017

I think you can overlapply the hidden control sections. They are fairly thin and if you needed to drill some holes for nails it shouldn't be a problem. I am not sure the panels will fold flat with move able control bar.
For stability, to prevent the panels from racking, I would use a middle rail.
