Sometimes the wood that's closest to home is the one that suits the project best. Birdseye Maple is an old standby among figured domestics, boasting numerous ''eyes'' that add depth and interest to maple's attractive blond coloring. The knots are caused by numerous tiny branches that attempt to grow, but are then absorbed into the trunk. Since they are technically knots, the birdseye will be most pronounced on flatsawn sections of the blank.
