Turn your shop vacuum into a 2-stage dust extractor with the Dust Right® Separator! You don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy a cleaner, safer work environment.
Dust Right® Dust Separator
Turn any shop vacuum with a 2-1/4'' ID outlet into a 2-stage dust and chip separator. When used with most power tools and shop vacuums, the Dust Right® Separator captures sawdust, wood chips, and other debris before it enters your vacuum, preventing the loss of suction power caused by a clogged vacuum filter. The five-caster base makes it exceptionally stable and easy to maneuver around the shop. Plus, hoses connect inside the in/out ports, preventing unintentional disconnections. The Dust Right® Separator creates a cyclonic air flow that causes most wood dust particles and other materials that are heavier than air to separate, preventing them from being passed to the vacuum. The vortex effect that is created prevents the loss of suction caused by prematurely clogged filters

I watched a Wood Whisperer video comparing this product and two competitors and became intrigued. I had previously seen this item on sale for $60 and didn’t purchase one (regretfully). After seeing how it performed in the video and my near constant Shop Vac maintenance I decided to keep an eye on them. Unfortunately for me, the price was marked up to $100, which I thought was a little pricey. Recently they were marked down to $80 and I decided to pick one up. I have to say I have been impressed. I have used it while using my jointer, table saw and planer and it collects a significant amount of dust and reduces the stress on the Vac. All in all a great product, would have liked to have bought it for $60, but certainly worth the $80 that I paid.

Exploring furniture grade, unfinished hardwoods for the first time, I figured I'd have to invest in a wall mounted vacuum which would further eat into my precious little shop space. Not so!
When I found the Dust Right Dust Separator I recognized that the mechanics of the settlement tank were fundamentally identical to our Koi pond filtration system but using air instead of water. As I expected, it works beautifully!
I am still using a HEPA filter bag in my Shop-Vac, the suction is still great, the Shop-Vac hose stays in the Dust Separator as it should and the Dust Separator hose stays in the Shop-Vac without needing a screw on cuff, the particle size and volume collected in the Separator today was enough to have filled up the filter bag after about 3 hours of planing with my jointer and the very fine sawdust went into the filter bag, not into the air.
I did not attach the wheels because my shop is too small to need wheels and their absence adds to the stability of the canister if that might ever be a problem.

I just purchased a dust separator today. For 1 hour I tried separating the top from the bottom. I tried everyway I could think of and it has moved about 1" and looks like it has been through a war. Can someone please tell me if there is a secret to taking these apart? It looks like whoever put them together pushed the inside piece so deep it will not come out. I think the top has a crack in it now. maybe Gorilla tape will hold it together. if the store was still open I would take it back now.
However, it may cause your Shop Vac to have to work harder and takes up more space. Also, since you get very little dust in your Shop Vac when using the Dust Right already which prolongs the life of the filter on the shop vac I would think that this is not a cost effective/efficient solution. Collection of dust would not really improve. An investment in a larger more powerful shop vac would make more sense.
