3 Drawer File Cabinet
I found that the dimensions of the bottom should be an inch wider than your plans state. Also, one part of the plans call for a quarter inch thick tongue and groove, while in another spot, the plans refer to the tongue and groove as a half inch on the bottom.

All in all I would recommend your plans to my friends.

The Plan had a few mistakes, but quite useable
The file cabinet plan was over usable and fairly straight forward. There were a few mistakes with some discrepancies between the drawings and text. Therefore you needed to double check everything to be sure. I opted to build it with Baltic Birch Plywood which changed many of the dimensions anyway. The front edging was left off the plan, but that was easy to add on and compensate for.

Not for beginners
The instructions are a bit difficult to follow and understand. They do tend to clear up as one works with them.

Good plans. Thank you Rockler.
The plans were easy to follow. I made a few modifications, such as eliminating the spacers under the top, using 1/4" strips for edging the plywood, and routing the decorative edging on the top and bottom front. The cabinet is a pleasure to use and looks great.

I found these plans easy to follow and very detailed. Rather than use 1/2" hardwood for the drawer sides, front and back I would suggest using 1/2" plywood which won't warp. Use the Easy Slip-On Folder Hangers (#63016) to which will also protect the top edges of the sides. Use iron edging for the front and back of the drawers.

So So plan
Provided a basic design and cut lists; but there were details left out as to the parts list that did not match the catalog from Rockler. Also, it would have been nice to have better illustrations on the parts with regard to what level should be built first, etc.

Didn't mention that you need edging, dowel size and the wood screw sizes to make this file cabinet wood have been nice also. Plans are good, just starting on it.

There is a problem with the File Cabinet Traditional Style plan Rev. 02/11. There is a discrepancy between the Fig 4 drawing and the measurements given in the text. Fig 4 shows distances to center line of rails from the top at 12 3/4", 25 7/8", and 38 5/8". The text under Four Drawer Carcass, dot points 7, 8, and 9 show measurements of 12 3/4", 24 3/4", and 36 3/4". Which are the correct measurements? I believe it is the set in the text and not Fig 4.
Gerry M on Apr 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You are correct. I just built the four drawer unit and matched my layout to the diagram. The drawers will not fit, so I have to determine how to rectify this on an already stained and lacqured unit. Plans say to read thoroughly, I guess I wasn't thorough enough, like the publisher.
Do you have plans for 3 drawer file cabinets, box , box, file?
Lyda C on Aug 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I don't have a 3 drawer file cabinet plans. However, the 2 drawer could easily be modified to make a 3 drawer. Good luck
The price is 8.37 for the 2 drawer file cabinette? Are they assembled when I get it? Shipping is only 3.99m

BEST ANSWER: This is a plan for those who would like to build a distinctive wooden file cabinet.
The file cabinet plans ask for a drawer slide part # which is not listed by Rockler. The plans require a slide with 1/2" clearance. I've chosen the "100-lb. Zinc Over-Travel Drawer Slides - CenterlineĀ® 757". It has a half inch clearance as needed. On careful review of the cabinet plans, they state a clearance of 17/32 between drawer and side, or an extra 1/32 on a side. Do I need to adjust this to 1/2 inch, or is this slight 1/32 extra necessary for smooth operation of the slide?
Gerry M on Apr 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: When I make file drawers, I wait until the frame is made and the slide is in place. Then I use a story pole to measure between the slides. Rather than a snug fit, I allow a very small space (+ or -) a 32nd. That becomes the width of the drawer. This way you compensate for any errors you may have made fabricating the frame.
