General Finishes High Performance Water-based Top Coat Gloss

Item #

Rating:
90% of 100

This is one of the hardest, most durable consumer polyurethane topcoats on the market today. It is non-yellowing and offers easy water cleanup. It contains all the consumer-friendly characteristics of PolyAcrylic Blend. In addition, it contains a UV Stabilizer to protect it from breaking down in sunlight and to protect the underlying stains from fading. With its pure polyurethane durability, it's a great choice for hardwood floors.

Direction for use:

  • Oil-based stains must be completely dry before using a water based topcoat. Wait a minimum of 48 hours before applying General Finishes High Performance.
  • Use a foam brush or paint pad applicator. Apply liberally, using smooth, even strokes with the grain. Use enough material to provide a wet film.
  • Sand between coats using 320- or 400-grit sandpaper. Remove dust before recoating.
  • A minimum of 3 coats is recommended. Additional coats may be applied to increase durability and depth.

Terrific Varnish, Works Great!
Great stuff, works as advertised. Ignore the bad reviews because either the reviewer didn’t follow the instructions, got a one-in-a-million bad can, or tried to use it the same as oil-based finish.

Water-based polys, (and GF’s are the best) like High Performance are a different tool, like a slotted and Phillips are different. One doesn’t really substitute for the other.

High Performance works exactly as advertised. In the can, it looks like coconut milk, though with a consistency like warmed honey. If you follow the instructions on the can, you’ll do well! I used it building a snare drum, stained with GF water-based dye stain, over coated with GF Enduro Sanding Sealer (reviewed separately). Sanded the sealer with 320-grit wet/dry (3M), wiped with a blue paper shop towel lightly dampened with water (tap; doesn’t really matter), then a pass with a dry one. Set the drum down to dry, while I opened the pint can, and stirred with a stolen spoon. The solids had settled little, So was ready quick. I’m using a mid-price Walmart synthetic bristle brush for everything, works well, cleans up nice. The drum is 14” x 5.5”, and about 3/4 of the 2” brush, heavily loaded works well for each coat. I’ve found GF’s water-base stuff does well with thinner than thicker coats, and drips & sags can be a real nuisance. The open time on High Performance is reasonable; at 80F and maybe 75% humidity, the varnish can be brushed out for over 3 minutes, which is great on a drum. I just take the loaded brush around a few times to get the surface wetted, the go around with light back and forth strokes with the grain to gat an even spread, then lightly dragging the brush over the whole thing to get a nice, even coat. After ten minutes, it’s dry to the touch, and ready to scuff sand with 400-grit for the next coat.

I’ll write more in a bit, I know some folks like good user experience, glad to help. Buy with confidence!

I use this on my wood art pieces where I can use two or more coats (sanding with progressive finer grits). This brings out the grain and beauty of the wood.

I am building a drum set, and wanted a durable topcoat that will not amber. I’ve used GF products for years, and am certain this product will provide gloss and durability, without yellowing the Pewter dye stain I want to use for this project. Of course, the convenience of water wash-up is a big plus!

I've used this on one guitar build and it is safer and easier to use than nitrocelulose lacquer. It seems to be just as tough and buffs to an equal shine.

High Performance is durable, easy to use and has worked quite well for all my applications. I use it as a top coat, or as an undercoat for other water-based top coats. I only use gloss, then rub it out to the finish level I want.

Can this product be applied over painted surfaces?
Cameron H on Apr 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes but be sure to all the paint to comletely cured before applying GF High Performance. The weakest bond will be between the paint and the substrate. Priming before painting is highly recommended. Stick with matte or flat water-based paint (latex) for best results.
Can we use this on concrete stepping Stones/outdoor garden statues that have been painted and detailed with acrylic latex paint for a successfull durable finish that our customers will appreciate?
Toddified on Jun 26, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I would suggest that you use the "Exterior 450” top coat. I have used the 450 product over their acrylic milk paint products to change the color of ceramic planters. They have survived full sun for over 7 years.
I have a bar table top that im working on and it turns white after it comes in contact with water? I tried cleaning it off and then using this but the white stain returned after coming in contact with water. What are some steps I can do to remove the white stains and also to prevent them from returning? Preferably products sold at this store. Thank you.
Salvador C on Jan 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I do not know the answer to this question. I have used the product successfully on table tops, but they have not been exposed to standing water. The online forum "Sawmill Creek" is a good source of information with many experienced finishers contributing and answering questions. One of them will know the answer.
Would it be okay to just use this as the only finish on a piece? I don't wait to stain I want to capture the grain the wood has.
Daniel on Jul 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work great as a clear finish that will enhance the natural grain.Enter
can this product beused on stained concrete?
Dominic M on Aug 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No water base on concrete. try a Schofield concrete sealer made for stained concrete you will find it at a Masonary yard
does it have an amber color?
p m on Oct 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The finish is clear no amber tint. Good for clear over light wood or paint color. You will not have any yellowing.
Would this High Performance be ok over old cabinets, pre-catalyzed lacquer or some industrial finish ?
The cabinets are 5 years old but the finish is dull and I would like to revive it.
I am thinking of rinsing old finish with 50/50 mix of Denatured Alcohol and water, then scuffing lightly old finish with 220 grit.
Then applying High Performance Topcoat.
Julian J on Jun 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have never used the product to over the kind of finish you are considering. It's been a great product in covering stained and raw woods.
Is this food safe?
Thomas C on May 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes I used it on my kitchen table
I just completed a project on a kitchen table where I used GF Java Gel Stain (3 coats)..Allowed it to dry for 4 days before applying top coats. I used GF High Performance Water Based Top Coat (Semi-Gloss). I applied a total of 4 coats with a HVLP spray gun. It looks like I got on a nice coat now...very smooth. My only concern is at different angles in the light I can see the pattern of the spray gun (almost appearing white from a distance)...... However, when I approach it and look directly over it or from another angle it looks just fine. I'm going to wait at least a week or two to try and allow it to fully cure before I rub it out some. Are these the correct steps i'm taking with this top coat? How long should I wait? And what should I use the rub it up some to provide more of an even sheen all over? I don't mind if it dulls some when I do it. Thanks!
Michael A on Dec 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am not an expert, but that 'hazing' you see might be because earlier coats did not completely dry, and/or the coats were too thick? High humidity? If the haze is in lower layers, buffing probably won't help.

I used this top coat on a guitar over an epoxy filler. Let dry about 2 hours between coats, lightly sanded with 400 grit each time. Then I buffed out with automotive buffing products. Turned out great. Nice hard clear finish.

The folks at GF are usual good about answering questions like this.
Is this a full gloss product?
Smiley on Apr 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Part of the answer will depend on how many coats you apply. I typically spray on 3-4 coats and have been very happy with sheen. If you're looking for a really "High Gloss" there may be some other products or techniques that would work better for you.
how to rub out?
Geno on Jul 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: For a high-gloss finish such as on a guitar body, I wet sand with 1000 grit, 1500, and 2000 then use a rubbing compound followed by a swirl remover.
Is this finish ok on hardwood floors ? Has anyone tried it on floors ? Thank you very much for your help ! Julian

How long should I let white paint water based dry, before applying Topcoat over it ? Would 3 days be enough ? I just painetd some wood rails with water based paint. Paint dried in 1 hour. I applied 3 thin coats of white paint; but I don't know if 3 days is enough time to allow paint to harden more.
