Inflatable Bowl Sander

Item #
25223
Rating:
72% of 100

Here's the inside story: This is the first sander to adjust completely to underlying surfaces. It's ideal for sanding and polishing the interior of bowls, spoons, or any other concave surface. Stays soft all the way to the edge! Can be used on an electric drill, but works best on any flexible drive shaft that will accept a 7/32" shank size. Sanding sleeves are easy to change. They lock into position as the sander is inflated using a micro hand pump or a bicycle pump.

Notice: Not compatible with Dremel Flex Shaft.

Inflatable bowl sander
This was a great addition to my sanding equipment. I am a novice scroll saw bowl maker, but this tool has elevated my 'skill'. Take it slow and let it work is the way to go. I use it on a drill press for great control. I have not yet mastered it on a hand drill.

Once inflated the sander works every well. My problem is, the shafts or inflation stem is much smaller than a bicycle tire valve stem. It therefore lets the air from the pump escape around the stem and none goes into the inflatable bowl sander. I solved the problem by wrapping a strip of masking tape around the sanded stem to increase its size to that of a valve stem. It then took air perfectly. The manufacturer ought to provide a collar to put on the shaft for inflation.

The replacement sanding sleeves are pricey...
The replacement sanding sleeves are pricey but it is a specialty item that works like no other. This is an extraordinary short cut that takes hours off of hand sanding. I will continue to buy.

It works reasonably well but is...
It works reasonably well but is way overpriced for what you get. Save the money and use elbow grease and regular old sheet sandpaper.

Wasted money
Air leaks out in less than 2 minutes. Pretty useless. Would not recrement it!!!

Quite difficult to deflate and reinflate. It takes too much time to change the sandpaper. It works fine when it is finally loaded.

What exactly do you get for $57.99? The rubber attachment and specialty sandpaper to fit or an actual sanding drill with cone & paper?
JeanAnnette S on Feb 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: When I received this sanding head I went to the dollar store and found a balloon kit that had a hand pump and used the hand pump with a section of clear plastic tubing to pump up the sanding head.
Does this come with polishing head?

Could you guys at Rockler make a video of this tool on how to inflate/deflate and how it works?

BEST ANSWER: Hello
I have been making bowls for a number of years and a challenging area is getting a smooth interior finish. I have used small scrapers, hand sanding, power sanding and while I can erase a number of tool marks, I never could get a "perfect" bowl. When I saw the inflatable sander, I thought it might be an answer and ordered the item which included one sand paper insert so that I could see how well it worked. I hooked it up to my battery powered drill and gave it a try. Wow! I could smooth out the bottom curves, the walls, and the bottom. I immediately ordered two pacs of the 80, 120, and 320 grit sleeves. yes, it is expensive, but when you want to make a handsome bowl with minimal tool marks, this is the best solution I have experienced.

I'm in need of a solution to bowl sanding and found this product. It looks like it will meet my needs, but i was a bit surprised at the cost for only the inflatable and sanding sleeves. Is it really worth it?
R M on Feb 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, expensive, but I’ve found mine to be indispensable. Buy extra sanding sleeves out of the gate as you will likely need them sooner than expected. You also need an air pump and wrench within reach for sleeve changes.
Why can't I get a replacement for the rubber bladder for this sander?
Roger on Jun 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Replacement bladders are available at King Arthur Tools
