Interlock Signmaker's Templates - Letters, Numbers, and Symbols

Create custom signs quickly and easily with your router in Comic Sans font!
Item #
80% of 100

The templates interlock to form a stable pattern as you rout signs with appropriate carbide router bits and bushings (3/8" for 2-1/4" kits & 5/8" for the 4" Kits ). Secure patterns to your work surface with masking tape, Self-Adhesive Discs, or double stick tape (sold separately). Each Letters Kit includes a total of 40 letters with duplicates of common letters and three spacers. Each Numbers and Symbols Kit includes two each of 0-9 and 9 common symbols including @ and &. Requires the use of a plunge router that accepts standard 1-3/16" template guides. The Interlock Signmaker's Kits require either a 3/8'' (#33967, sold separately) or 5/8'' (#30933, sold separately) guide bushing, as well as a 3/8" (#36676, sold separately) or 5/8" (#32443, sold separately) signmaking router bit.

Woodworking Experience:
This just adds another function to the router.
The box clearly shows what needs to be added.
This is the router bit & guide. A plunge base
is probably necessary also.
I don't know how often I'll use this. I wanted to
put names on some tool totes I made for my
grandsons Christmas presents.
A fun little add on accessory. Just beware that
you will need a kit for numbers & letters if you
need to do both.
Spell check not included. (LOL)

DavidD on Feb 21, 2016

I would like to use a v-bit with the 2 1/4" lettering kit. The bit measures 1/4-inch diameter by 5/16-inch carbide height...1/4" shank. Would that work?
billR on Jul 23, 2018
In reference to the 4" Interlock Signmaker's Number and Symbols Kit, what is the actual height of the numbers and what is the height of each template piece? What is the thickness of typeface's stroke? What is the width of each number and what is the width of each template piece? Are the numbers monospaced or proportional? Will this work with a DeWalt DPW611 compact plunge router? Of what material is the template made? How thick is the template's material?
The-JB! on Sep 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: actual height of numbers & letters is 3 3/8. Each template is 6 1/2 high. templates are 3/32 thick .width of templates varies but are proportional. The dewalt dpw611 works fine . that's what I use.
Do you need a plunge router to use these?
G R on Jul 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: If you do not want to ruin the signs you will need a plunge router for sure.

Does this work with my Robin plunge router?
Ret4golf on Feb 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It will work with any plunge router. You must have the correct bushing installed for the template and router. Check the base plate to see what guide bushings it accepts or get a new universal base plate if your Robin base plate won't accept the correct guide bushings.
Problems with w and m. How do I make them?
David H on May 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Could you elaborate on your question? If you are referring to making them during the same word for instance, then the process is simply to tape down what you can do and then add the remaining letters reusing the "M" as the "W". The same if you had two "T"s or "L"s in the same word, etc. I hope this answers your question.

Which double-sided tape is recommend for use with the signmaking kit?
Charles G on Sep 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use a thinner tape rather than wide. The wide tape seems to get caught in the router. You can use a carpet tape or any double sided you can find. I have no preferred brand to offer.
Can you use these to make vertical signs? Like 6 in wide by 6 ft long?
Luther B on Aug 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They will not interlock however you can figure out your spacing tape them on with masking tape and your sign will look great.
Why no wizard for comic sans font like for state park font?
NICK P on Aug 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am very sorry that there is no wizard for the comic sans lettering. In the printing business there is always a need to kern yout type to make it look better. I was also told that no 2 part templates or need to kern leters was the reason for no wizard.! Oh well I will work it out my self again!
Can I use these templates with a Dremel tool?
Jerry V on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No you need to use a router with a guide plate that runs along the inside edge of the letter you are cutting. You will cut the edge of the letter and pretty soon they will not be usable.
Can I use these on a curved surface of a wine barrel stave?
Angela R on Feb 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I didn't have good luck with a slightly curved (warped) 2x10 piece. The guide would jump outside the template due to the slight curvature of the piece and the large flat area of the router base. Once it jumped outside the stencil, the router was chewing into the stencil, ruining that letter/number. This was a downwarped piece. I didn't try it on an upward warped piece like a barrel stave. The double curvature of the barrel stave and narrow width I'd expect to be a challenge with a heavy, clumsy router. I might try it with a Dremel-type tool or one of the dental drill - type encravers on the market with a simple outline of the letters penciled on the piece. I used the stencils on barrel ends with no problem, since they were flat. Good luck.
Will this work with a Bosch 1617 plunge router? The subbase does not have holes in it. I cannot find a subbase that fits it that does.
William S on Nov 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: William, I have a 1617evs Bosch plunge router and I had to do a little fabricating on the base that I ordered with the kits. the holes to center the brass bushing did not quite line up. Also, if you don't get your bit exactly in the center of your bushing it will chew on your bushing so it is important that you get everything lined up. Also, make sure that your wood is FLAT or you will slip out of your template and chew it up.

Do you sell a guide bushing plate for my makita 3620 A?
Ron H on Sep 19, 2017
Not sure what your asking about, there are guides and there are plates. The makita 3620 comes with a plate that will accept the router bit guides unless someone has enlarged the opening to allow for larger bits. If this is the case you will need to look for a new plate.
Yes, rocker carries router bit guides for multiple sizes of bits, along with plate blanks that can be customized to fit router bits and guides.
Hope that helped.
Do you have 5" lettering templates for large sign making? Thanks
Aline P on Aug 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm sorry, but not at this time.
Does anyone know if I Can use a roto zip with a plung on it to do these letters?
Billy P on Nov 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Only if you could adapt a router guide bushing to the rotor zip base plate. The bushing rides up against the letter template edges keeping the bit centered and protecting the edges of the template from the spinning bit. Without a guide bushing you would tear into the plastic letter template destroying the template. See the router guide bushings on the Rockler Web site. I hope this helps.
Is it possible to use this set without using a plunge base on the router?
