Powermatic® 6'' Jointer w/Helical Cutterhead

Item #
39886
Rating:
88% of 100

This 6" Jointer features a helical cutterhead with 40 four-sided indexable carbide knife inserts - this design provides a superior finish and quieter operation compared to conventional cutterheads, and the inserts require no adjustment once they are installed. If a knife insert becomes nicked, simply rotate it for a fresh edge and continue working. Oversized infeed/outfeed tables are mounted on dovetailed ways. The fence is 38" in length, with positive stops at 90° and 45° right and left. The fine/quick adjustment lever on the infeed table offers quick set-ups with precision controlled depth of cut. The heavy steel stand features a 1 HP motor with a non-slip v-belt drive for maximum performance. The 4" dust port offers easy connection to any dust collection system.

Features:
  • Helical cutterhead with four-sided knife inserts provides smoother, quieter cutting and finer finish than conventional systems
  • 66" long adjustable infeed and outfeed tables provide more working surface
  • Fine/quick adjustment lever on infeed table for precision cuts
  • Extra-long 38" two-way tilting fence with positive stops provides quick positioning for 90° or bevel cuts
  • Enlarged sheet metal stand provides a sturdy base
  • 1HP motor offers plenty of power
  • Fence controls are center-mounted for convenience
  • Push button switch is lockable to prevent accidental starting

Powermatic jointer
Took a while to get the jointer as it is to heavy to ship UPS. Easy directions to follow which made for quick setup. You will need two people to place the bed as it is heavy. Some quick adjustments to the 90 and 45 degree fence and the test joint look great. Much quieter than my straight blade jointer.

Assembled smoothly in less than 2 hrs.
I purchased the 6" Powermatic Jointer with Helical Cutterhead for my small, one car garage shop. Because of the small size of my shop, I assembled the jointer on the Bora Portamate PM-2500 Mobile Base, fitting 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood under the Jointer base. I was glad to have two strong helpers to place the 250 lb Jointer bed on the base, but after that, everything went together easily and all crucial surfaces came well aligned from the factory. On the mobile base, the jointer is easy to position wherever I need it in my shop. The jointer is surprisingly quiet, is easy to adjust for taking the depth cuts desired. I'm very glad I paid the extra to get the Powermatic. This jointer will meet my needs for the rest of my wordworking years.

100% worth the money
Set up only took a little over an hour an hour as others have mentioned (separate mobile base installation included). After that you set the bed onto the base and secure it, attach the motor pulley belt, slide the fence, align with a square and you are ready to cut.
So far I've run red oak, tigerwood, bolivian coffee wood, and poplar through and they all ran across like a knife through soft butter! seams were virtually invisible!

This was definitely at the top end (even a bit over) what I was looking to spend as a hobbyist but worth every penny. I've taken up the mentality of buy once cry once with tool purchases. I want to buy something that will last me a long time and I can guarantee this will be in my shop for years to come.

Great purchase.
Easy to assemble with a little help from the neighbor. The bed is a little heavy to lift on to the base. Very easy to adjust the fence, both in width and angle. The helical cutter really cuts done on tear out.

Jointer
So far so good. There was a mix up in shipping and my mobile base was delayed (not back ordered) but other than that, I'm happy with this purchase.

Customer Service Nightmare
If I could, I would Rockler zero stars. I hjave found this to be true in the past...they never deliver on time.. You order products and they dont have them and cant tell you when they will arrive. Some day perhaps, they just show up. They never keep the customer in the loop. In you are in business, you have to make business decisions and those are based upon the information you receive. In this particular case, Rockler just didn't seem to offer or provide any solutions or empathy. In fact, I got the sense they were mad at me because I complained. Word to the wise..I ended up with the same experience from Powermatic. They didn't care and didn't call back. So tell me, why spend a premium number on a product that you don't get premium service. These other reviews ?.. There are other products out there that have "solid construction" and "helical cutters" those are pretty common in products of this type at this point and time.. Lets face it for all intents and purposes, they all come from the same place...off shore. The reason you pay this upcharge premium for this product is local support and good remote support. In my case, both failed.. By the way, due to their errors, I still have a "boat anchor" sitting in my shop that I originally ordered on Dec 3rd that received partial in mid December.

I chose the helical cutter for a fine edge finish. It seems to be similar to a hand plane running at an angle, producing less tear out. I also wanted a machine with a dust collection port. The longer bed length is an added benefit for material handling.

Needed a jointer and Powermatic has a good reputation....also Thanksgiving Day deals (15% off plus free shipping of a 300+ pound item to my house)....no brainer

the 66" table that is as long as most 8" jointers.
donald k on Nov 27, 2015
The durability and cur finish of the helical heads was worth a few more dollars. After I was willing toi spend the money for a jointer (not a lot of choice there) then adding a little more for this head was easy. I am glad I did, it's working fine.

How wide a board can the 54HH manage?
Annie B on Sep 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's a 6" jointer, so that means it can handle a 6" wide board. The long infeed and outfeed tables allow you to get a straight edge on a six to eight foot board as well.
Why would I need a
Lift gate?
Jonathan H on Nov 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The unit weighs something more than 300 pounds. You need the lift gate to get it off a commercial trailer down to the ground if you don't have a loading dock.
What is the electrical requirements?
Earl T on Aug 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: this unit is a 1 HP 1 Phase and can be used with either 115v or 230v
Does this jointer have rack and pinion fence adjustment?
Steve S on Mar 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No the fence slides in a track and is locked in place by pressing a lever at the rear of the assembly. That adjustment is independent of the vertical adjustment.
Does the base that fits the 54A also work with this jointer?
