The Sugatsune Aileron Lid-Lift System combines a raft of cutting edge features into one simple, easily adjustable system. You get lift assistance when opening the lid, an adjustable lid stay that frees up your hands as you search for items in the chest, quiet soft-close action and 3-way adjustable concealed hinges. With the lid up and out of your way, you'll enjoy an unobstructed view and easy access to the contents of the chest. The lid stay attaches to the hinge arm for a clean look, and the soft-close damper is adjustable with a simple 5-way selector switch. If you have a chest, trunk or lidded bench, this system will help keep fingers out of harm's way.

Features:

  • Lift-assist function allows for easy opening of chest lids
  • Lid stay function keeps lid open so you can use both hands to retrieve the items you need
  • Soft-close function lowers lid gently to the closed position
  • Includes everything you need: concealed hinges, lid stay arm, mounting plates and screws
  • Closing speed of lid is adjustable

Note: See the ''Specifications'' section for a guide on selecting the proper lift tension.

Which lift tension should I choose?
To select the correct lift tension for your chest lid, calculate your ''Max. Door Moment'' using the formula and example below.

Max. Door Moment = Lid weight (in kg; be sure to include handle weight) x 9.80665 x Distance from hinge pivot to lid's center of gravity/balance point (in meters).

Example:

  • Lid weight plus handle weight = 4.5 kg (9.92 lbs)
  • Distance from hinge pivot to lid's center of gravity/balance point = 0.18m (~7'')
  • 4.5 x 9.80665 x 0.18 = 7.943, this is your ''Max. Door Moment''
  • Using the guide below, a Max. Door Moment of 7.943 requires one High-Tension lift

Selection Guide using Max. Door Moment (using 1 lift):

  • 4.0 to 6.0 — Medium Tension (Type M)
  • 6.0 to 8.0 — High Tension (Type H)

Fantastic hardware, highly recommended
I used 2 sets of the high tension hinges for a banquette I'm building for my kitchen. I wanted it to have storage inside, so a lid was going to be part of the construction, however, I also have young children and for safety, wanted protection from the heavy lid slamming down.

These fit the bill perfectly. The instructions are very picture oriented, but very clear. All measurements provided were in millimeters, so I found an old ruler and went to work. Everything went together perfectly on the first try and with the default settings from the factory, these provide excellent lift assistance and soft closing for the lid.

The lid isn't small either, it's 19 inches deep, 60 inches wide, and made of solid 3/4" maple plywood. It weighs between 15 and 16 pounds and these hinges operate it like a dream. I highly recommend these, this was my first time using Sugatsune hardware, but I'm very, very impressed.

Can you use this for exterior benches?
KKrafts on May 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Since all of these parts are to be mounted on the "bottom" of the seat and the inside of the back edge they shouldn't actually be exposed to the weather; plus the metal parts are well finished and the plastic parts are not exposed to UV light so that should not be a problem as long as any moisture that is on them is removed as soon as possible. I bought the "M" version and I had to make sure that my toy chest lid was light enough so that the "soft close" and "lid stay" part of the hinges would support it and work as needed. I would think that if you are attaching these to the seat of a bench you should probably order the "H" version. It should work as advertised.
Will these hinge sets close at an angle less than 90 degrees?
Michael H on Apr 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Michael, I am not sure if I understand your question, however I recently installed this hinge on a laundry hamper chest built into our master closet. With the hamper (chest) door in closed position (horizontally), to open I lift the door tilting it back until it is open to 90 degrees. At 90 degrees the door remains at rest. If you close the door to, say 45 degrees, and let go, it slowly closes back to 0 degrees. SO to answer your question, "Yes" these hinge sets will close at an angle less than 90 degrees.
Rockler lists tension calculation to use "Distance from hinge pivot to lid's center of gravity/balance point" while Sugatsune website saids simply "height of door". Which is it? My cabinet is 3.2kg W0.45 x H0.44
Rockler Cust on Jan 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Use the Rockler calculator as it accurately calculates the amount of torque the hinge will experience.
