Makes a nice looking tambour. Directions...
Makes a nice looking tambour. Directions are ok. You will need to reduce the width of the tenons to get the tambour around a 90 degree corner. Wires bought at a bike shop(as suggested) 1/16th in. coated cable with aluminum ferrules worked well. I've never made one before, but this seems superior to using canvas.

This looks like the best shape for the doors and I got a lot of useful advice from the Rockler community about the bits and how to go about building tambour doors.

Because I was looking at a 3-bit set that wouldn't require canvas or cables, but with this 2-bit tambour router set I can have a smaller turning radius than I would get with the 3-bit set. I'll use cables and still be able to see the wood from both sides. My project is for a large tambour window between our dining room and newly constructed office addition.

Is it possible to use leather as the backing for a tambour door?
Lex D on Dec 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Historically it is just canvas but this one is ment for cables to run through the boards. I wouldn't use leather, for one you'll never see it, treating it would be very difficult. If it's not really thin it will be hard open and close. Plus the chems used to cure/tan leather could effect the taste of the breads.. if you have ever stored food in a leather sack you'll know what I mean
What is the radius of track slot for the tambour door?
Terry A on May 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It has been a while since I made one, and I don't have one around to look at since it was for a customer, but I think it could be as small as 3" depending on the width of your slats and the thickness of your tennons. Some experimentation might be required. I also used Johnson paste wax for lubrication after staining and finishing. It worked well.
