Bought a used Lane Cedar Chest...
Bought a used Lane Cedar Chest that was missing hardware. Even without instructions the installation was easy and these supports worked great.

I have used three sets of these supports so far on Steamer Trunks I have made from Norm Abram plans. They work very well and I plan to make two more trunks for my other grandchildren. The big problem I have with them is they do not come in antique brass, like all the rest of the hardware I am using, and the bright brass sticks out like a sore thumb.

Good quality support. I bought these for a cedar toybox with a trunk style lid that I made for my grandson. Easy to install took about 5 min and hold the lid very well.

Very simple to install. Have purchased 4 pair. I'm most impressed with Rocklers shipping time, 3 days at the most to receive any thing I have ordered.

Decent quality support. Required a drop of oil at the joint to make it work smoothly. Unfortunately I get the feeling that the joint pin, which is thin rolled metal, will loosen over time allowing the formed metal stops to bypass and the support will hyper extend. But what can one expect for [price]?

only meant for very small boxes or chests
Installed pair on a medium size blanket chest (size of footlocker) they both bent the first time I closed the lid. I had the brass finish version

I have some heavy, long decking boards to cut on a compound miter saw. I need to extend the length of the miter saw station with temporary extensions for extra support. The brackets will be mounted to the outside edges to lock the two hinged vertical support legs at each end.
Ken on Jan 30, 2016
it is one of the few stays i could find that mount to the side on both top and bottom would have preferred soft close
todd c on Jan 4, 2016
This will be used on the outside of a wall-mounted, folding art cupboard to support an unusual leg structure. The main thing is that this can be used on the outside of the box and lid. Standard lid supports must be installed inside the box.

How heavy/large of a lid will this support work with?
Chuck D on Dec 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Well I built a cedar chest that was five foot long and 2 foot wide. It was made with mostly maple and cedar that was 7/8 thick. it had 3" frame around the led. I would say the lid weighed around 60 pounds. Good luck with your project.
Is this a slow close?
Katie N on Sep 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Katie,
Sorry, but I don't believe this would fit your idea of a "slow" close. Also. I don't believe it could be used in a situation that would require a slow close, those are usually reserved for heavier lids in my opinion. These are nice closures in the right application but will allow the lid to close as quickly as you allow it to. Good Luck and Good Woodworking. joe
On a small pine trunk would I need one or two stays?
Millie M on May 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It would depend on the size of the trunk. I used one support on a wooden box that was roughly 18" w x 16" W x 12" D. I believe you get 2 in a pack, so install 1 and see what you think. If you are doing a trunk that is large, it might be better to use a stronger stay.
Can I get this in bronze?
Ben L on Nov 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Ben,
I have bought these in "brass" finish before. I visited the Rockler website and saw that they are still available in this format. Hope that brass works for your desired bronze. joe
Will this work for a lid with a 30 degree angle?
Ryan H on Jan 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Ryan, This is designed to be on a full 90 degree (lid vertical) application. The 30 deg you angle you ask about is vague so, it would be a trial and succeed or fail experiment. If only open 30 deg, it might work if you could install it to lock out to hold the lid open, but then would it fold up properly at closing? If you're asking 30 deg past the normal 90, installation would be a challenge to get it to extend that far; folding as well. They're not real expensive and with some creativity, many installation challenges are overcome - been there done that. Good luck, Sm
