General Finishes Flat-Out Flat Water-Based Topcoat

Rating:

Flat-Out Flat, as its name aptly suggests, is a completely flat-sheened water-based topcoat with an understated look and velvety feel. It can be used over paint, stains or varnish, but is especially well-suited for use over milk paints and chalk paints, where it provides additional protection as a top coat, while also maintaining the characteristic ''antique'' look and feel of the underlying paint. It is sure to be popular among shabby chic restorers and those who specialize in antiqued finishes. Made with a durable self cross-linking acrylic, its performance is similar to GF High Performance, and may be used over or under High Performance.

Amazing top coat over reclaimed wood or a project that you want the look of a natural finish with the durability of a polyurethane.

Flat out the Best
For paint on a furniture piec, you really need a topcoat. If you want a flat look, then use the Flat-out-Flat...it is unreal and applies better than any topcoat finish I have ever used.
I put 3 coats of it on a buffet table with a 4” foam brush, I did not have a single brush mark!
I garantee you it looks like it was professionally sprayed.

Flat Out Flat clear coat
My job was restoring a 100 old lamp. The lamp was made of metal and probably painted with a mat or semi-gloss finish when new. I could match the patina colors, but the gloss factor gave me trouble. Flat clear coats from other companies were not flat, but had some gloss to them. The Flat-Out-Flat is exactly that, flat, which is what I was looking for. After applying this finish and then rubbing it a little with my bare hands to give it the slightest amount of sheen, the areas restored were a perfect match with the original metal. And, I liked the paint being water-based because there were no compatibility issues to contend with. Although the can said nothing about spray painting with this paint, I did it without any problems. Good luck. Uncle Bob

Flat top coat for 100 yr old reclaimed wood
Used this product to finish a 25"x33" cabinet top made from rustic pine flooring from a 100 yr old building. The boards were minimally sanded to maintain the original mill saw marks and the 100 yr old patina. Three coats were applied with a foam bush and the clear finish preserved the patina without any glare. The finished went on easily without any brush marks and dried in less than 2 hours.

Flat out Flat
I used this over java gel on 2 end table tops. I waited about a week before applying the topcoat (very humid that week). I sanded with 400 grit paper and applied 2 coats. It looks perfect, A few brush strokes were visible after the 1st coat, but none after the 2nd coat. Very flat finish, the tops look like they did before the finish was applied. I've also used it over antique white GF milk paint with same results. I love this product. Its great if you want to retain the original finish and not add any shine.

Will this yellow over time over white chalk paint?
Jessica J on Jan 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have not had any problems with yellowing and I use this on most everything. Yellowing is usually a condition of Polyurethane Products, and not water-based Poly Acrylics from my experience.
Can I use FLAT OUT FLAT over Java Gel Stain? I tried Gel Top Coat Satin, but it is much shinier than I want.
KATHERINE G on May 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You should be able to use the Flat Out Flat with no problem. It still has a minimal, soft sheen that is lovely. I just recoated two pieces painted with the GF Milkpaint with FOF because I wanted something slightly less shiny than satin. Since you used an oil based GF Gel satin finish; wait at least 72 hours then use a 400 grit sand sponge and lightly buff the current finish, wipe residue off, and apply the FOF. For table tops such as dining tables, I use the GF Enduro Var Satin. It does have some shine but provides the waterproofing you need. This can also be applied over the GF Gel Stain. For dining chairs I use the GF High Performance Satin. Good luck. Love everything General Finishes.

Do I need to sand if I used the Java gel stain? Can I apply without sanding? My two coats of gel stain have sat for about 10 days now.
Danielle W on Nov 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I. Would give it a light sand with maybe 320 grit assuming you did the sanding you wanted to do before the gel coat. The FLAT OUT FLAT works really well. I have both brushed and sprayed over black milk pint and got a very nice finish that would take a coat of wax and look very nice. I would spray if you can
Has anyone ever used this (FOF) over acrylic paint on a canvas or other acrylic painted surface?
Dwight T on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes works fine, multiple thin coats work best
what should I use to clean my table that I finished with flat out flat to maintain the flat finish?
mary m on Mar 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you are talking about general cleaning, then just dust with a damp microfiber cloth. Do not use any chemicals or polishes on it. This is my go-to finish on my bedroom furniture and other pieces that do not get used often. It holds up nicely.
Can this be used on plain sanded wood as a matte sealent?
Mike on Mar 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My wife decided she wanted a glossy finish. So I ended up using the general finishes Glossy. It seems to have the same properties except for the glossy vs. Flat. Parts of the furniture were sanded wood. They had been finished before and I only lightly sanded but it left a hard, protective coat which thus far has held up well.
