Maple by the Piece-3/4" Thickness

Item #
86% of 100
The classic American blonde, Hard Maple features creamy white sapwood with a reddish cast, and rugged durability. The wood has an exceptionally fine, even texture, and tight pores that yield an excellent finished surface. These thin boards are machined to 3/4" thickness, eliminating wear and tear on your planer. You won't have to worry about chipout, which is difficult to prevent when planing thin stock. Thin boards are ideal for edging, veneering, inlay, marquetry, sides for decorative boxes, bending stock, bent laminations and whatever else your imagination can dream up!

Lumber Details:
  • Tree: May reach a height of 70 to 120 feet, with a 24 to 36 inch diameter trunk
  • Sapwood Color: White with a reddish cast
  • Heartwood Color: Uniformly pale reddish brown or light tan
  • Grain: Usually fairly straight, but can also be curly or wavy. Sometimes exhibits decorative figuring like bird's eye, maple burl, blister, leaf, and fiddleback
  • Texture: Very fine and even
  • Working properties: Due to hardness, tools must be kept very sharp
  • Carving: Responds well to carving tools
  • Steam bending properties: Fair
  • Strength Properties: Very high bending strength. Resistance to compression parallel to the grain is high. Hardness is rated as medium. It is heavy, and resists denting and marring. Hard Maple can be up to 25 percent harder than Soft Maple

Update on Review from the 3/4" Walnut
I couldn't update my review about 3 boards I received, where 2 weren't in good shape. I wasn't happy. Without expecting it, or requesting it, Rockler is replacing the board that was in terrible shape (and hand picked). I'm very happy & this one act has changed my mind. I will definitely be using Rockler again for purchasing wood! Thank you!

Russell R on May 14, 2016
Is this planed to 3/4" or is the thickness less than that?
Rich L on Sep 21, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have found that planed lumber from Rockler is never less than 3/4 inch. It is always 3/4" or slightly thicker.
Is the maple as white as holly since I do a lot of segmented woodturning and need good contrast with darker woods?
A shopper on May 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The maple I buy from Rockler is never as white as holly. I have never seen white maple. I use the hard maple for my cutting boards, and when finished with mineral oil, it has a soft light tan color which contrasts perfectly with the walnut wood that I use with the maple. Rockler has always had quality woods, and I have never had a problem with it. Hope this helps answer your question.
What lenghts are available ?
Frank B on Nov 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From Rocker you can buy a variety of sizes up to 4' X 10". From a hardwood supplier you can get a much wider variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses. If you have a planer, jointer and band saw buying from a hardwood supplier is less expensive as you supply the labor to mill the lumber.
Does this come in 10X24?
Alexis C on Nov 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No. The largest width that I could find was 5 inches.
Is this sugar maple?
L G on Jul 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Sugar maple and hard maple are generally used to describe the same species, with sugar maple being more commonly used to describe the actual tree, whereas hard maple generally describes the lumber.

?Do you have maple boards 60” long?
Clifford H on Jun 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Not pre-milled to 3/4". However, we do have maple lumber in our stores S3S ( surfaced 2 sides and 1 edge) at that length.
Looks like there are 3 different widths available pictured is that true?
Donald W on Jun 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The graphic is misleading. The 3/4" and 1/2" come in widths of 3" or 5". The 1/4" comes in widths of 1 1/2", 3" and 5". Looks like they have just used the same graphic for all thicknesses.
