Powermatic® Benchtop Deluxe Mortiser

Item #
84% of 100

The new POWERMATIC® PM701 Benchtop Mortiser features an in-line depth stop which allows the user to stop at preset depths without racking the mortiser bit to the base. Its heavy-duty reversible handle is so versatile that it can be changed from one side to the other quickly and easily and requires no tools to do so. The stock hold down features a specially designed double lock system. One locks from the side, the other locks from the top, to completely eliminate any slippage when removing the chisel from the work piece. This hold-down is also reversible to allow stock from 0 to 5" thick to be captured underneath it.

The new POWERMATIC® 701 Benchtop Mortiser has a quick-action cam lock that will quickly lock the fence into position with one 90° movement. This lock also features lock nuts, so once set they will not have to be continually adjusted. Set-up has never been easier or more precise. The new POWERMATIC® 701 Benchtop Mortiser features an integrated bit and chisel spacer system. These two spacers are used to accurately and quickly account for the space needed between the bit and chisel during set-up. Large work surfaces in the table and fence allow for more stability and accurate cuts. The new mortiser also includes a large hinged chuck door with magnetic catch. This unique element allows the user to easily access the drill chuck with the standard 4" chuck key to lock the bit in place. In addition, its rack and pinion allow for simple and quick fence adjustments.

A very fine mortiser
I love this mortiser but when I first used it, I found the chuck has to be tightened a lot more than I thought on the bit to keep it from sliding up and ruining the correct spacing with the outer chisel. Mortising into hardwoods means having to put more downward pressure on the bit and I learned quickly after my wood started to smoke that the spacing needs to be perfect. Rookie mistake. I also learned that some dry lube spray is also strongly advised to keep the bit spinning smoothly in the chisel. Once you learn the basics of this mortiser, you'll love it too.

Woodworking Experience:
Powermatic is one of the remaining first quality tool makers available in the US. This mortising machine is an excellent example and because the price is so reasonable, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to compromise.

Woodworking Experience:
I have used the machine several times in the short time that I have had it. Found it to be easy to use and works great. Having reviewed several brands before purchasing this one there is no doubt that this is the best choice. Makes very accurate repetitive cuts and has good safety features.

Damaged, but recovered.
So far seems to work fine, even though the heavy mesh at the top of the motor was dented in during shipping, until it rubbed on turning armature inside. Pried it back out and things seem not the worse for wear. As far as quality of machine is concerned, I'll know more once I start my major project next month.

Woodworking Experience:
Burned again
I was dubious about PM tools after receiving my drill press but followed the reviews and ordered a PM Mortiser. Oops! It arrived with a base that was cracked in 2 places where the vertical attaches to the base and the fit and finish was worse than on the PM drill press I received 3 months ago. The old cracked and the new base hadn't been cleaned after manufacturing. Caveat emptor.

Not bad....
Alignment is difficult, as mortise bits want to wander a bit. Overall tho, good addition for craftsman styled pieces. Also have tenon unit for saw. Combo is great.

I know the mortiser does not come with bits. What manufacturer's bits do you recommend?

Does this fit a 3/4" shank chisel bit?

how many bits come with this Powermatic® Benchtop Deluxe Mortiser?
doodle on Apr 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately, none. You just get a really high quality bench top mortise. It comes with a chuck key, cone sharpener, and a tool holder. One thing to pay attention to: By default, it is set up for the long bit chisel sets. It comes with an adapter to put between the church and the quill, but if you buy long bit chisel sets, you don't need to use it. Pretty slick machine. I am enjoying mine.
Would appreciate recommendation for buying mortising bits and long shaft drill bits?
Kenneth A on Oct 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I recommend the longer shaft mortising bits (the machine can handle both short and long). Otherwise you can have some problems locking the bits in place (the shaft has to reach up through the machines collars to reach the chuck). by the way this is an amazing machine and i have made many pieces of furniture. combine this with a tenoning jig for the table saw and you can make PERFECT mortise and tenon joints with no fussing.
is there a Powermatic stand available for this mortise?
Martda on Sep 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There may be a stand, but it doesn't matter much. Rockler has many stands that can be used with this mortiser. My mortiser sits on a square stand from Rockler. I just had to get 3/4 inch plywood and cut it to fit the stand and then I put the whole thing on rollers so I could move it around as needed. There are also stands designed for routers that would work just as well for bench top mortisers. The only thing to be sure of is that the stand must be well built. The mortiser is very heavy and needs a base that is sturdy and not too narrow.
I own chisel/bit sets that I've used for my Delta mortising attachment for my drill press. Will they work with this mortiser?
Rob on Aug 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Powermatic uses standard size chisels/bits.
What is the deepest reach from fence to mortise bit?
Heath I on Jul 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I measured mine and the deepest reach is 4 1/2 inches from the fence to the center of a bit.
Can I draw a hole on a 6 inches stock?
Rolando L on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm assuming you mean to say mortise a hole? Mortise bits aren't that long so you would have to do it from both sides of the six inch stock. If this is what you want to do, first drill a hole through the stock with a regular drill bit smaller than the mortise opening you want. Then mortise out the hole from each side and you'll have a square hole through the stock.
Can the 701 mortiser be converted for use as a drill press? If so what attachment would you purchase?
Ed B on Jun 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I attempted to do this using an extra chuck. I wanted to use it with Forstner bits. It was just too awkward and of such limited range I just got a bench-top drill press instead - which is much more flexible. I suppose it can be done for very limited needs, but takes too much time for saving some bench space. As a mortiser, however, this is a great purchase and I have found it very helpful.
