The essential tool for pen turning on a lathe! This precision—machined steel bar is held in the lathe to ensure accurate pen turning when using a live center. No drill chuck is required—the mandrel is held directly in the morse taper of your lathe! The brass compression fitting allows you to turn shorter length blank without having to use a wood spacer. Simply slide the fitting onto the shaft and tighten it at the correct location for your blank.

This Pro Pen Turning Mandrel includes a #1 morse taper arbor for use with a #1 morse taper lathe, a 7mm mandrel shaft and knurled nut. The mandrel is also available with a #2 Morse Taper (Item #49514, sold separately).

Great little accessory
Works very well in my application. Thinking about buying a few more just so I can have pen blanks made up and ready to turn as soon as I finish one.

I just received the Rockler pen turning kit with the 7mm mandrel #2 taper. Sad to say that the mandrel does not fit my lathe (Central Machinery 8"x12" with a 7/16 spindle bore; the Rockler mandrel is about 1/2". Would the Rockler mandrel with #1 taper fit my lathe's 7/16" spindle bore?
Rick T on Sep 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This sounds like you have a lathe with a #1 MT. Rockler has a couple of these. one is #44309 and the other is #44341
Do I need a 10mm mandrel to make a 10mm pen?or something with 10mm drilled hole. I am new at turning. Been looking for 20mm mandrel. Thanks, Krakkerjakkp356
Art S on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No. You will need 10mm bushings that fit your pen inserts. Each pen style has its own bushings that fit the mandrel. You will need the bushings for the specific pen style. Read the instructions with the pen kit-they will explain how the bushings need to be set up.
What point do I use on the tail stock with the Rockler Pro Pen Mandrel # 1 taper?
Kenneth U on Mar 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I used a live center. My lathe had #1 MT in both head and tail stocks.
What is the thread size for this mandrel?
Clark D on Dec 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure the thread size. If your asking for attachment to the lathe use the taper. It slides into the headstock taper and the tail stock presses it in place. Use the knock out rod to remove it. If your needing a nut for the threaded end I use a mandrel saver. For my projects it has worked better than the nut anyway.
what is the difference between the # 1 and the #2 mandrel? I have a mini lathe, what should I use?
Rochelle H on Mar 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The difference is the size in the diameter of the end that fits into the headstock of your lathe. Your lathe’s user manual should tell you which one fits. Mine has a MT1 spindle so it needs the #1 mandrel. If your spindle size is MT2 it will need the #2. Hope this helps.
