Rockler 4-Pc. Straight Bit Set - 1/2" Shank

Includes four of the most popular straight bit sizes for dados, grooves and rabbets.
Item #
96% of 100

Cut tight-fitting dados, grooves and rabbets for your cabinetry and furniture with this four-piece boxed set of straight router bits. The set includes the most commonly used straight bits: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4", and comes in a convenient storage box. All bits are double flute, combining a smooth cut with efficient chip ejection. They can cut up to 1" deep, so they are capable of cutting mortises as well. With carbide tips, they boast a long cutting life with minimal need for sharpening. Sturdy 1/2" shanks reduce chatter for maximum performance.

Excellent Product, Excellent Price
Excellent Product at an excellent price. Backed by Rocklers warranty. Comes in an inexpensive but nice, and protective MDF box with decent finish on the outside. Easy to put a label on and then put it in a tool drawer for safe storage when not in use. Highly recommended.

What hardness grade of carbide are these bits, like C2, C3, C4 ?
TOOLS S on May 10, 2015
How long is the shank? I see the cutting blades are 1", but i need to know the measurement from the minimum depth line to the top of the bit to see if it will cut high enough for my jig setup.
Robert C on Sep 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The shanks for the 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch bits are 1-1/2 inches long. the shaft for the 3/4 bit is a little shorter, about 1-3/8 inches. If you look very closely at the photo you will see on the 1/2 inch bit that the blue area extends down slightly into the silver shaft area on opposite sides. There is no cutter in that area but you would subtract another 1/8 inch from shaft length. Ditto for the other three.
Is this a usable set for the Leigh FMT Pro or do i need to go spiral?

Rockler 4-Pc. Straight Bit Set - 1/2" Shank
Leigh FMT Pro Frame Mortise and Tenon Jig
Leigh FMT Pro Frame Mortise and Tenon Jig
BEST ANSWER: Leigh recommends up-spiral bits for this jig. The jig itself and the whole system of guides is designed to be used with up-spiral bits. I have several sizes and they work great. The mortises are made with the opening facing up, so you really need the dust and wood shavings to go up & out. With a straight bit I would anticipate a lot of smoke, burning, and possibly a stalled-out router.
What are the sizes?

BEST ANSWER: The set includes the most commonly used straight bits: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4",
Will these work well with the Rockler box joint fixture? Or should I go with spiral?
JACK L on Jun 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Up-cut sprial for best results per the instructions!
What is the total overall length of the bits - from the end of the base to the top of the cutter?
Thomas on May 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Overall (o/a) length varies for each bit in my set. The 1/4 inch cutter o/a lgth measures 2 13/16 inches; 3/8 inch cutter o/a lgth measures 2 3/4 inches; 1/2 inch cutter o/a lgth measures 2 11/16 inches; and 3/4 inch cutter o/a lgth measures 2 1/2 inches on my set--purchased in 2015. Hope this helps.
Will these work with the CNC shark? I am new to the CNC routers and not sure which bits will work.
David R on Sep 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure which model your Shark is, but these bits are 1/2" shank, so they would not fit in the Piranha, the Original CNC Shark, or any model with the water-cooled spindle. These machines are limited to 1/4" shank size.

They would fit in the larger Sharks that use a full-size router with a 1'2" collet.

In most cases CNC machines operate more efficiently with "mills", or spiral bits for pockets, straight cuts and cutting toolpaths. These bits have smoother operation and less machining marks.

Feel free to contact Rockler Technical Service if you have further questions.
How "loose" are the dados when cutting undersized plywood? Trying to pick between this set and Rockler's undersized set.
Joe S on Jan 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: As you know, plywood is undersized from the dimension stated. Also, thickness varies between lumber mills. The 1/2 inch plywood you could buy at one home center could likely be different than a sheet bought across town at a competitor. Your best bet would be to measure the plywood you intend to use with digital calipers. Once you have that measurement then search out the correct router bit. Or make your first cut with router bit that is too small. Then adjust the router to make a cut parallel to the first to widen the groove. This takes patience and trial and error. My solution would be to use a table saw and dado set. With various chippers and shims a perfect match could be achieved and consistently repeated in other work pieces.
