As we all know, one must use the right tool for the job. No sense hacking away at a block of hard cheese with a flimsy knife. Accordingly, the parmesan knife in this set is short, sharp and sturdy to cut through hard cheeses with ease. Use the universal cheese knife to slice through softer cheeses and to spear the wedges onto your plate with the forked tip. The cheddar knife is shaped like a square spatula with a finely honed edge so you can lay the slices onto your crackers after slicing. Finally, the cheese fork is great for serving up cubes or slices after the knives have done their job. Hardware is made from food-grade 304 stainless steel and attached to the handles (sold separately) with included 1/4-20 threaded inserts. All hardware is dishwasher safe; the handles are easily removed for this purpose.

Great gifts--wife loved them, great design on box
Just a few things to add to instruction:
1. When using a dense, wood such as Ebony, Cocobolo, Amboyna Burl, I found that a 10.5 mm bit (such as used on common fountain pen blanks) worked best.
2. I usually create a slight concave in the end where the hole is drilled with and end grain slicing cut; however found by simply power sanding the concave with a 2" disk worked well for making 25 of these in a hurry.
Amboyna Burl, Walnut, Gaboon Ebony, Myrtle wood, all unfinished.

Great Kit, decent price
Liked the kit; high quality, and at a fairly decent price. I did not do a board with four knives, I did four boards, using each knife. The knives were of high quality and I ordered two kits. Highly recommend. Fun to turn, and you are limited by only the design of the handle! Good instructions.
Ash cheese board with Bacote handle on the cheddar knife.
Ash cheese board with Black Walnut serving fork handle.
Ash cheese board with ebony inserts. Parmesan cheese knife handle is Chatka Viga.

These are a high grade product with good stainless steel. Better that others available. However they are not magnetic in case you plan to retain them with magnets.

Can I add ceramic handles to your items or are they for wood onlly?
Steindora G on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is a threaded insert that you screw into a wood handle. A hole is drilled into the wood handle to receive it and epoxy is recommended to hold the threaded insert in place for good. This threaded insert allows the handle to be removed for washing the knife. If you have the right size hole to receive the threaded insert into your ceramic handles I think it would work. You would need to epoxy the threaded insert into the ceramic handle.
Wher are the blades made ? Are the locally sourced? Do you also have the handles?
Barbara L on Dec 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: These are made in China. These are offered for the woodturner to turn ones own handles.
Can Pitch and Resin Remover be safely used on a wood deck to remove falling pitch that lands on the deck without harming the wood deck?
greg g on Oct 15, 2016
What size is the threaded end of the handle? What size turning block should I use?
shane w on Feb 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If one turns to the diameter of the available bushing, the diameter is about 25/32 -- just over 3/4". I recommend using the mandrel that is available and double checking as you get close to the diameter.

Stock that measures at least 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" actual measurement or above should be used.

It is good practice to measure the mating end of the kit hardware if you wish a smooth transition from handle to steel. You can also turn the handle to a bit larger diameter with a slightly concave end for a pleasing look.

Can I purchase the pieces individually??
Fred A on May 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: To the best of my knowledge, Rockler is not offering these as individual pieces. Not sure why Rockler didn't answer your directly.
Will screwing the insert hold very well. I have done similar using epoxy to permanently hold. Will this be the same?
Jim C on Dec 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I too have done that. Over the years I have epoxied the stud into the wood with no issues. Removing the wood handle is a huge selling point for many customers. I can speak from experience to use the threaded stud.
Can you buy the knives separately?
Ed on Oct 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: not that I know of but why would you want to make only one piece? it makes such a beautiful set when all of the handles are made from the same wood
Can you glue 2 pieces of wood together before turning handles for these, and will they be strong enough?
Danellyn on Nov 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can, but you have to be careful not to split them when screwing in the threaded insert, I would recommend keeping a clamp on while driving the insert in, you may also want to do a trial run on a couple of scrap pieces, if you are using very hard/dense wood, drill an oversize hole and epoxy the insert instead of threading it in.

Hope this help and good luck
