Rockler Wireless Speaker Kit with Playback/Volume Controls

Make a mini speaker with a beautiful wooden cabinet—connects to any Bluetooth® device, and features full playback and volume controls!

Item #
84% of 100

This kit includes all of the necessary electronic components to craft a mini wireless speaker—you build the speaker cabinet in the shape and material of your choice. You can use a simple block of wood with a hole drilled in it, or build a hollow cabinet with fancy joinery—it's up to you. You can also get creative by integrating speakers into furniture, cabinetry and other commonplace items. The speaker connects wirelessly to any Bluetooth enabled device. The kit includes a single full-range speaker, a USB cable, and a control pod with a USB charging port, 3.5mm auxiliary input, and on/off, forward, back and pause buttons. Pressing and holding the buttons lets you adjust the volume. The speaker and control pod are held in the cabinet via friction fit. Just use a 1-7/8'' hole saw or Forstner bit to drill the holes. You can also use a jig saw, as the bezel will conceal any rough edges. No soldering is required.

  • Connects to any Bluetooth-enabled device
  • Control panel features forward, back and pause buttons
  • Pressing and holding the buttons adjusts the volume
  • Auxiliary input jack lets you connect input sources with a standard ''mini jack'' or headphone cable
  • Inernal 500mAh battery is recharged with the included USB cable
  • Easy, solder-free wiring with the quick-connect color-coded fittings and 12'' wires

So far so good.
I'm impressed with the electronics. The speaker is very loud at full volume. I have listened to it for approximately 6 hours on the first charge, at about 50% volume, (50% on my iPhone as well). I made mine in a couple of hours out of 1/2" mdf & maple veneer.

Looking to build some small speakers as Christmas gifts. This seems like a good kit to do that with. Also easy enough that my children will be able to focus on building the enclosures and not the electronics.

I work for a Fox Acustics, a small speaker enclosure company out of Houma, La. My boss and the company owner allows us to listen to music at work, and headphones break to easily (I've been through over 20 pairs of earbuds in 2 years). This seemed like a good option for my first attempt at a bluetooth speaker project.

What bluetooth level? 4.0?
Charlie on Sep 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The instructions says the device needs to support Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
What is the sound quality like?
Cabinet Guy on Sep 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have put together these speakers in a box, and I have found that the smaller the enter box open space is the better the speaker sounds,
and yes they don't put out the sound that 2 speakers do or more expensive ones, but for the price you get a good sound,
I have bought several others from stores and these sound as good if not better, like I said the larger the enter box is, the more sound is lost.
There seems to be some confusion on whether (and how) two speakers can be wired together. Can someone from Rockler clear up this question?
C N on Sep 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This speaker uses A2DP signal processing to combine the right and left audio channels using a single speaker. The speaker will pair with most audio devices, and will occupy the entire Bluetooth channel that it is paired on.

In short, two speakers cannot be combined.
Where is the battery?
Darkw1ng69 on Sep 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is connected to the back of the speaker.
Can this can be used while plugged in?
phoxhole on Sep 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can
In the first step of the downloadable instructions, it states that to use 1/4" router bit and cut a dado 1/4" deep. Unless of course the material list is wrong, cutting a 1/4" deep dado on 1/4" thick material would go right through the wood. If using the suggested 1/4" thick material, the dado cut would be 1/8" deep, not 1/4". To keep that depth cut to its approximate depth of cut,
would recommend 3/8" thick material and followed by 3/16" depth of cut for the dado?
Daniel L on Oct 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am using 1/4" material and am making 1/8" dado cuts. With the stock being 1/4" thick, the sides being 3", and the ends 2 3/4" square, it was the only thing that made sense to me.
How does the speaker turn off? On off switch does not turn it off
Terry V on Jan 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Try holding the button down longer. I that doesn’t work hold it for a or shorter time. I’ve not had any problems.
How I am looking to try build a few Bluetooth speakers. Doo the kits you have only come with 1 speaker or can I get a kit to use 2?
Gerry on Sep 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: These kits only have one speaker. This system does not allow pairing more than one speaker at a time.
Is the sound quality better with a hollow box or a solid piece of wood? Or doesn't in matter?
Todd V on Jan 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: KEEPING in mind the dimensions recommended in the instructions for the inside volume (250cubic cm!), do the math and realize this is a tiny container! It won't sound like a huge Bose speaker no matter what you build, and bigger interior space will swallow the sound output. It gets it's volume control from, for instance a cell phone and the tiny electronics in the unit won't go loud. I found it has plenty of pleasant volume for a tiny speaker and in a room, you can hear it just fine. It's a nice LITTLE project, BUT, be careful to read directions for connection of speaker wires and plugs are a bit fragile and I don't think you would want to disconnect and reconnect the plugs more than once or even twice...It's a nice unit but needs to be handled with care!
could it work with non bluetooth products. such as ipod classic?
dan p on Oct 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi Dan. There is no mini jack on the unit, only a Bluetooth interface. I thought about that too as I own an IPod that I've had since 2005, butI can't use it with this. I did buy two of them as I have a lot of uses for it myself, and it's built very well and I bought the second one because I think it's going to make an awesome gift! Once I give that one away I'm sure I'll be buying more of them.
Can you extend the wires easily to place speaker in a larger container?
Kenneth L on Nov 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The wiring is very easy/basic. If the two components are to be installed back to back, the distance from the front of the material or box to the back must be at least 2" but no more than 6" to allow wire connections to be made. Check out the technical downs pdf.
If this were to be used in a solid block of wood how deep would the countersink need to be?
Jim S on Nov 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: HI Jim, If you're talking about allowing for the inner flange depth, it would be 7/16". If you're talking about clear space behind the speaker, I like about twice the distance of the full depth of the speaker. With the speaker at 1 1/8" deep I think minimum depth should be 2 1/4". If that's a completely enclosed space you might want to find a way to vent air from inside. Although it's small it will still push air inside what would essentially be the cabinet and will sound better if that air can escape.
What is the depth of the speaker?
William P on Feb 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Depth is probably about an inch and a half, should be in the installation instructions that are included.
is there a volume adjustment or is it at preset level?
Craig on Jan 25, 2019
The volume is controlled by the blue tooth device you pair it with.
how thick is the speaker?
Robert L on Dec 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you notice the specs, the required interior space is 15.25 cubic inches for "optimum enclosure vollume". If you make an enclosure with that much interior space, there is of room for the speaker and the control module which usually fits opposite the speaker in this little enclosure. How thick the speaker is? I'd say over 1-1/2 inches but the control module is thicker due to the electronics involved. You might be able to write to Rockler directly if you need more specifics. THis kit is designed to work optimally in a tiny 'cabinet' box.
What kind of foam do you use in the speaker?
Frank W on Feb 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I used some left over seat cushion 3/4"thick that I cut up. You don't need much
Do you need to power off when you're not using the unit or should it be turned on/off as needed?
Dutch John on Nov 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It needs to be turned on/off as needed unless it is plugged into a USB port.
Has anyone experimented with enclosure designs? I put this in cigar box and installed a baffle to decrease the interior cubic volume to about what is suggested in the instructions which improved the sound somewhat. I'm considering trying a folded horn design.
Dr. Marc on Nov 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have made a couple of them already. I made one box kind of like the inside of a Bose radio. It came out ok, still need some adjusting to it. I have also just made a plain box for it which works fairly well, although it is not really that loud at all.
Can you connect two together? If so how far apart can they be?
Big T on Aug 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I had the same question. A friend of mine that’s an electronics wiz said yes with a small signal syncer. Haven’t done it yet though.
What's the ohm output on this speaker?
Scott L on Jul 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I suspect it is the standard 8 ohms, HOWEVER< since it is self contained and small, I'd be suspect-- As it is a self contained little system, I suggest you not mess with adding additional speaker or messing with the output! Only other suggestion it so send ROCKLER a query at their tech dept and see what they say?
How deep is the speaker, from front to back?
Dan H on Dec 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The speaker unit is 1-5/16 inch (33mm) front to back and the control unit is 9/16 inch (15 mm) front to back.

When you power up do you need to hold the button down for a couple of seconds or is there a delay on start up? Same for turning off. There are various beeps and sounds coming out of the speaker -- any clue as to what they mean?
John on Nov 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sorry about the misspelled words in my answer. Basically give the speaker time to find you device after power up
While listening to music, will a phone call come through the speaker?
Joe H on Nov 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The phones ring comes through on mine but not the actual voice of who I’m speaking with. It also has the text and email notification sounds that come through.
After pairing the bluetooth does any hear a pop sound from the speaker when selecting other apps? If so, how do you stop that popping sound?
Daniel L on Nov 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi, sorry I don't seem to have that problom, but I have only sey them up on the bench at this stage. I'm going to CNC some boxes for Xmas..
If I have an iPod with blue tooth going through this speaker, is it possible to also run Bluetooth radio through it?
Jeff H on Sep 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you are connected to the speaker you can stream any type of audio from your phone, including internet radio, through the device.
