Sjobergs Smart Vise

Brings the versatility of a tail vise to almost any setting.
Item #

The Sjobergs Smart Vise is a portable, practical work-holding solution that brings the versatility of a tail vise to almost any setting. Clamp it to a set of sawhorses, a picnic table, a shop stand - almost any stable surface - and you get an instant woodworking vise, complete with a short row of dog holes. The included bench dogs feature flat faces, which pivot to align themselves with odd-shaped objects. Because of this, the Smart Vise also works great as a carving vise. It offers three mounting options: dowels for drop-in ease, clamps for a firmer connection, and screws for the ultimate in stability. Jaws open to 4-1/2".

  • 1" thick MDF top with melamine coating for stability and easy glue removal.
  • Standard 3/4" round dog holes for optimum clamping versatility.
  • Includes (4) plastic bench dogs.
  • Three mounting options: dowels, screws and clamps.
  • Clamps not included.

Woodworking Experience:
Smart Vise
Handy little bench vise to have...I don't have a real bench with bench dogs, and this works to hold boards for hand planing short boards, say three feet long, maybe 18" wide max.

Woodworking Experience:
Great versatile bench vise
Worked perfect where I didn't have any space for under the bench top for a regular vise. Great for holding down boards and assisting in glue ups.

Perfect for the small workshop
This vise gives me a lot of flexibility. If I need or want to work in a different spot, it's super mobile. I attached it to my workbench with bolts and wingnuts, so I don't have clamps in my way. But if I want to move it to work in another spot or outside it's a quick uninstall. Very cool.

Nice product. Very expensive considering the material construction. Assembly easy. Will mount it above normal bench height for small part builds.

Good addition for small shop
Other than the top not being solid, this thing works great. I am planning to remake the top and it will be awesome!

Is this a Patternmaker's Vise?
Ron K on Apr 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is not a patternmaker's vise only because the jaws do not pivot. The jaws move straight back and forth only. Patternmaker's vise jaws pivot to hold unusual shapes.
Are the jaws quick release?
DAVID O on Nov 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, they are not quick release. The speed to open the calmp is very good. I use this vise specifically for dovetail drawers and custom boxes. It does very well and there is little to no movement once clamped.
My Sjoberg bench vise is binding. How can I fix this. The vise is attached to the bench.?
Jerry F on Feb 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've sparingly sprayed white lithium grease on just the threads with some success. First, be sure everything is relatively clean and there is no sawdust or obvious mechanical issue. If that vise gets skewed, it will easily bind up.
what is the max. depth of the table/shelf that it is clamped too? It looks like it might be only 1 ½ - 2 inches? In other words, could I clamp it to a bench that was 4" thick?
Larspa on Oct 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: (non-woodworking bench built by previous homeowner) is 4 1/2" thick, and I have no problems clamping the Smart Vice. And I'm using my smaller clamps to do so. You could even use "longer" clamps...the only issue to be aware of is whether the clamp posts hinder the work you're trying to accomplish...usually not.
What is the height of the whole unit?
Zahar on Jul 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: 3 1/2 inches...
What is the maximum space a piece can fit when vise is fully extended?
Cammm on May 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The vise will hold a board that is 15" wide, when the vise is fully opened, and the "bench dogs" dowels are placed in the widest-spaced holes in the vise.
What is the glue packet used for (dowels or screws) ? The assembly drawing makes it look like the glue goes in the screw holes instead of either the two small dowels or the two larger dowels. Seems ODD to me, but I have near zero experience woodworking so maybe this make sense.
Anybody who has put one together (simple except for the glue question) please feel free to comment.
Absolute B on Dec 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The glue is just used to strengthen the joint between the long/square wooden piece and the plate, which are screwed together with the four screws. The glue is not really used in any screw or dowel holes.
