Sturdy, could be tricky to install (since on back of faceframe)
I purchased these because I needed a hinge that would attach to the back of the faceframe and because I do not have the tools for a mortised hinge. I used them to secure overhead cabinet doors that open vertically. I was pleased that they hold my small and medium-sized doors open vertically without additional support like a spring or magnetic catch. The small doors are 22" x 10" and the medium are 26" x 12" The doors are 2 1/2" x 3/4" pine, with a 1/4" plywood insert for some reference on how heavy they are. I have a unique project and installed the hinges while the cabinets were not yet mounted to the wall. I was therefore able to have access through the back of the cabinet. Because I was able to mount the hinges from the back of the cabinet, installation was easy. Installation probably would not have been as easy if I had to predrill and screw the hinges while reaching in through the front of the cabinet opening. It would have been tricky to position the drill in a tight space on such a small surface. The features make note that the surface area should be 13/16", and I was also happy to find out that they mounted on the back of my face frame, which only has about 7/8" of space. Another thing to note is to be careful with how much you play with the hinge before installation. I had tested out one of the hinges by opening and closing it in my hand and by mounting it to a couple pieces of plywood to determine the overlay I wanted. I'm pretty sure I bent something slightly because the cabinet door with this hinge doesn't hold open as nicely as the others. It may be a coincidence and the hinge still works fine, but just a heads up.

Works Well for specific projects
These hinges worked well for my wood working project. The hinge has a particular snap to it when opening or closing. The edge of the door clears the face well and was within tolerance. I would buy these again.

When refinishing my kitchen cabinet, I...
When refinishing my kitchen cabinet, I wanted to hide the cabinet hinges and these hinges worked great. All you do is screw the one end of the hinge to the back of the face frame. Then line up the cabinet door and screw it into the cabinet door. They only open 90 degrees but I was willing to put up with that to have hidden hinges. They don't come with instructions. It's hard to open & close the hinge in your hand, but works good once installed.

These hinges were exactly what I...
These hinges were exactly what I needed for my cabinet. They are well-made and sturdy and very easy to install. But being a self-trained hobbyist woodworker I've never used hinges like this before and it took me a while to figure how they operated! Once I figured it out installation wasn't a problem.

Concealed Hinge Option for Lipped/Beveled Edge Doors
Great option for concealed hinges on lipped/beveled edge cabinet doors. Standard European/concealed hinges don’t allow for the additional door clearance needed on lipped edge doors, so these are a good choice (and are $20+ cheaper than the Rockler hinges for lipped edge doors). Biggest downside is that you can’t adjust the doors once they are up, so you need to be careful when installing to ensure your door will hang level.

I used the product to update the look of my existing overlay cabinets. The hinges are made well and each bag contains extra screws. Some cutting/routing of the inside cabinet sidewall may be required depending on the face frame. It would be nice if the hinges came with instructions to determine the backspace for the door mounting locations.

Soft screws
The hinges are very good, but the screws are soft and not well-machined. One broke off and a couple of others stripped out when unscrewed to be relocated. I’m going to use other screws to complete the job.

My 1/2" cabinets are not thick enough to accommodate the required bore for a typical european hinge. This should do the trick for my face framed cabinet doors.

These hinges were easy to mount as they go flush with the face frame. The springs are strong to handle larger doors. Be careful when closing the hinges as they do snap shut!

Bruce H on Nov 16, 2015
Because my cabinet doors have a tapered edge I could not get the hinges that have a cup that needs a mortise hole. The mortise has to be 1/4 inch from the edge of the door and with the taper like it is the mortise may have gone through the edge of the door. I would have preferred the mortise concealed hinges.

They say a face framed cabinet but the picture does not look like a face framed cabinet? looks like it is attached to the inside of the cabinet wall? just want to make sure before I order.
JAN W on Mar 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The hinge in question is mounted on the inside of the cabinet. The picture you see is in the the closed position from the inside. You can't see the mounting of the hinge when you open the door. It's mounted in the back of the cabinet. Of course the hinge when opened is mounted on the door itself. I hope that answers your question.
Do these slam shut when they get close to shutting?
Wendi P on Oct 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do.This model type is not soft closing. The mounting screws will loosen up with use in a short time!
Is this type Surface-Mount Face-Frame Hinge self close or soft close available?
GrandmaJamie G on Nov 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: That would be a question for Rockler, but definitely would have been a better application if I had known there was one. Doors slam shut if you don't close them with the handle.
Will these work for 1/2 in thick door? And will this effect the overlay?
JoshWarner on May 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Josh, yes these will work with a 1/2" door. I ordered one set of hinges and experimented with them before I ordered all that I needed. The overlay will not be affected if you don't mount the hinge too close to the edge of the door. I marked the front of my cabinet with a pencil around the sides and corners of my door before removing the door. I removed the old hinges on the door and cabinet and I mounted the new hinges on the cabinet (near where the old hinges were) before mounting them on the door. Then I held the door up to the cabinet with the hinges closed (and keeping the door within the marks on the front of the cabinet) marked the holes on the back of the door where the hinges would be attached to the door. I then removed the hinges from the cabinet and attached them to the door where my marks were and then reattached the door to the cabinet. This was difficult and time consuming at first but it helped me determine where to attach the rest of the hinges so that the overlay was correct on all my cabinets. Hope this helps! My builder was AMAZED and had never seen these hinges before!! He said I could go to work for him anytime!!!😁
I am replacing hinges on a 5/8 inch overlay door, will these work for me? My cabinet doors have a thin edge, designed to open by fingertips. Thanks in advance.
Susan C on Jan 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They should work. I am assuming that the lower edges and upper edges (only) of your doors are beveled to the thin edge for opening. If the vertical edges are also beveled it will be a close fit but they should also work.
hi; I put lattice moulding around the face of my cabinet doors, to make them nicer. I didn't think that adding the thickness (doors are now 7/8" tick) would cause an issue with clearance, when opening, but they are surface mounted and I don't think the hinges I've got will work. I have some 90 degree walls that are going to impede the cabinet door now opening properly, because it's thicker. Do I have to build the sides of the cabinet out, and or, cut the doors narrower, to make space to open doors? Or would a hinge be able to pull it away from the corner and make more space, when opening? thank you!
Roxanna L on Nov 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This type of hinge opens straight out from the edge of the opening for the cabinet. So, if your door is 7/8" thick you will need at least 7/8" between the cabinet opening and a wall coming 90 degrees out from the cabinet face. You will also probably want some space for any door pull you will want to mount.
Are there any installation instructions? We are trying to install these and are struggling. I've searched the internet and cannot find an exact match. Please help. Thanks
Marcia T on Aug 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Mount the cabinet side of the hinge so that it is flush with the face frame. Then, with the door held in the open position, mount the door side of the hinge onto the door. The exact placement on the door, i.e. space from the edge of the door to the hinge, depends on how much overlay you want. But if you want 1/2" overlay, then the hinge on the door should be set about 1/2" away from the door edge. This measurement also depends on the thickness of your door.
Would this work for a no show bathroom/medicine cabinet mirror hinge (with frame to drill into)?
totallrob on May 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Its oversized for such a purpose. It's more appropriate for a workbench door. It also still needs to be drilled into from the rear. I also found there was a LOT of play in the hinge, so the door doesn't sit straight. I'd look elsewhere.
How do you know how far to place the hinge on the door? why don't u have printed instructions so that you have at least a starting point!! Not happy
roger s on Nov 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I put the inside edge of the door side hinge 3/4 inch from the inside edge of the door. The cabinet frame was 3/4 inch thick. Hope this helps.

Tom T on Jan 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, no.
Can you use this hinge for inset cabinet?
Kamel on Sep 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used these in my kitchen and they are designed for overlay doors. They attach to the inside of the frame (as pictured) , and have 3/4 space that allows the cabinets to close and overlay the front of the frame. You would likely be having your cabinets jut out 3/4 of an inch on the hinge side if you elected to try these on inset doors, and the handle side would ride 3/4 of an inch parallel as well. Another option is needed. FYI, I ordered a single pair on the front end to insure I understood how they worked before ordering in bulk. Good luck.
Is there a heavy duty version of this hinge? my cabinet door sits inset in a wall so the door and wall are flush. the door is very heavy and the its weight causes the hinges to sag and the door to rub on the frame and get stuck. It also damages the frame and door. Is there a similar hinge that can support up to a 40 pound door without having to router and inset the hinge into the door and frame?. I am currently using 3 surface mounted face frame hinges per door.
david g on Jul 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: David, Rockler asked me if could be of assistance. I installed 16 of of their Surface Mount Hinges back in 2015 and have had great results; however, my doors are much lighter than yours and are surface mounted rather than flush mounted. I'm sure you have tried doubling up on the screws to prevent twisting. If you're already using 3 hinges per door, then you probably have no choice than to use heavier duty inset hinges. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful.

Is there a no mortise product out there for kitchen cabinets with about 165 degree opening rather than 90?
Homerenoer on May 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you have a frame less cabinet then you could use item #66613. You could use the same hinge with faceframes if you put a piece or wood behind the face frame to bring the surface out even with the edge of the faceframe itself.

Is there a mounting template for a 1/2" overlay?
Bruce S on Sep 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have never run across one anywhere. Due to the many tab size choices it would not be just one but many templates. The instructions are available from suppliers and manufacturers. I have received some hinges without instructions. If you plan to install a lot you could use the Rockler Concealed Hinge Jig. That's what I use. Love it.
I have a cabinet with a cover panel which touches the wall. Would this hinge let me turn this panel into a door which would lay flat against the wall when open? It would require the end which is currently touching the wall to rotate inwards the thickness of the panel. If not this hinge, is there any concealed hinge which will do this?

If you have about 3/4 of an inch from wall these will work plus they are adjustable
is there a solution to having the screws getting loose on the 31952 hinge ?
tom m on Dec 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Are you using these hinges in mdf boards? If so you need to use nylon anchors. You can find concealed hinges with the anchors attached. In hard wood you must predrill you screw holes making sure your bit is smaller than the screw. To tighten the ones that are now loose use a good wood filler and redrill.
What is the best way to intall them, techniques?
Harris C on Oct 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: These are pretty straightforward since they are surface mount. If you are hanging more than a couple doors, I would suggest building a quick jig to make sure that you offset is standard and your height matches across the entire project. You have two adjustable (oval) screw holes on each surface as well.

Can I assume these hinges cannot be installed in cabinets with very limited interior access? Mine are small bathroom cabinets with fixed shelves making access to the back sides of the face frames difficult.
