Woodworking Experience:
Solid Jig
Well made solid jig. Does a good job at squaring up a round log from the bandsaw. Wish it had a few more inches in total length, The logs that I'm making boards by "resawing" are around 22".

What fun to make boards out of a log/branch
I have used this on an 8inch branch and was surprised how easy it works. It will fit a "log" up to 22 inches long. Use a good band saw blade 3/4 or so and take your time. Cut two sides with this and then use the regular guide to finish the work to keep things square.
I took off one star as II would like the adjustments a bit easier, but if you like and use smaller boards this makes them in your shop from various sources - like branches, woodpiles, etc.

Woodworking Experience:
Works Great, But
I bought this thinking that it would be better than the home made log jig. As it happens both work about the same. The home made jig works for logs over 20 inches long. However, make sure the band saw blade is sharp and tension is right otherwise, the blade can and will cut crooked resulting in damage to the log mill

Carter Band Saw Log Mill
Works great, but has a very limited capacity. Can only handle logs 20" or shorter. It's expensive and In my opinion it should be able to handle longer logs.

Great product though I wish the sled came as a little longer for cutting larger logs. Assembly was very quick, it would have been quicker if I had not put the part with the press handle on it backwards. I've had some issues where it will not hold a couple of pieces of oak that had been split for firewood because of twisting in the wood caused the piece to pop out of the clamping when tightening the press. Otherwise, it works great, especially for very odd logs that have bends or crotches in them.

Product does an excellent job of providing 2 sides on a rough, round log section on the bandsaw that are both flat and are perpendicular to each other. It is easy to use, to adjust and gives excellsent results for moving then to the bandsaw fence to saw lumber slabs off at whatever thickness you wish. I only wish that it could give longer lengths like say 26" rather than the 21". I definitely would recommend it as a buy for making short lengths of lumber from "found" wood.

Log mill
It's ok, it would be better if I could put a 24" length log into the tool. Like all consumer products I'll find a way to make them better.

The mill is designed to cut...
The mill is designed to cut boards from a short log! that is cut one side flat then place that flat side on the platform and proceed to cut boards from the log. It is not intended to cut 2 sides parallel on a log as the fence is not necessarly square to the platform.

Do not buy if you own a Porter Cable band saw
The steel mitre bar that comes with this kit is rectangular and the mitre slot in my Porter Cable band saw is "T" shaped. I had to take the bar to a machine shop where it was put on a milling machine to cut the "T" shape on to the bar. It cost me $80.00. Also the bar is too thick so I had to make and add two shims to the bottom of the MDF board so that it would not wobble when the mitre bar was inserted into the mitre slot. So, unless you have about a week to reconstruct this Log Mill...

Will this jig work with the laguna 14 12 bandsaw? My concern is the miter slot.
gail r on Aug 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm sure that it will as long as your Laguna has a 3/4 x 3/8 miter slot.
Requires a standard 3/4'' W x 3/8'' D miter slot.
PS: I love my Log Mill and use it all the time. It is a pretty beefy Tool and it is infinitely adjustable.
What are the physical dimensions of this unit and the length limits of log that it will accommodate?
Jim D on Apr 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The sled base is 26" by 5" and the upright is 5" tall measured from the top of the sled deck. The longest log you can cut is 21". I think that wit some heavy duty angle iron and a bit of ingenuity a log of 28 to 30 inches can be handled. Although I haven't tried any logs much larger than 8" in diameter, I think logs of a foot or more can be manipulated. This depends on the size of the band saw. One with good resaw capacity will also handle this sled well.
How thick of a log will this cut?
Michael W on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The thickness really depends on the size bandsaw you have. All this mill does is clamp the log so you can push it through a bandsaw more easily. The length of the mill is variable, up to about 24" (i think), so you can clamp in a log that is up to 24" long
Does carter make this sled in any other length?
Dan R on May 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not that I'm aware of. It's a nice quality product, but is limited in length. No safe way to alter it.
My bandsaw has a 13” capacity. Will this product allow up to 13” diameter?
Chris O on Aug 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, the sled and t-slots take up space as well as I believe your top guide rollers will not allow a full 13 inch diameter. It is an Excellent product, and works well. You simply need a larger band saw to cut full 13 inch.
Will this sled fit Grizzly Bandsaws?
Allan P on Jul 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: provided it has a miter slot that is 3/4" wide x 3/8" deep
How high is the back support? I would like something like this to prep half logs for turning. The diameter is typically 8 to 12 inches.
Mike McH on Aug 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The back support measures 5" high and you get about 21" long working space. It's very heavy duty more than I expected, I quite pleased with it.

Will this work on the Rockler bandsaw top?
Rod H on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have a Rikon Band Saw it works fine on it. It should work fine for you on your Rockler Band Saw. It is a very nice fence.
If I have a 12 inch hgt. on my band saw, will the fence move far enough away from the blade to give me a 12 inch dimensional block?
Bruce T on Jun 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't think it will. The height is not the issue but if you pull back the adjustable fence as far as it goes it will have less than 12" from the fence to the blade of the saw unless you have a extremely deep band saw table.
