I bought the mini lathe and extension on sale. I almost didn't because the price was so affordable I was afraid it might not be that great. Boy am I glad I decided to give it a try. Talk about getting a lot of bang for your buck! The quality of this thing is unbelievable for the money. Very precise machining, solid as a rock, and runs as smooth as glass with plenty of power for the type of work you would do on a lathe this size.
Would highly recommend.

not bad at all!
works great!

well packaged and square to the world out of the box

the only negative i've found is the extension and its mating shelf on the lathe itself don't quite match up.
an hour with a file and sanding block made everything wonderful

Nice Lathe
I have not received the bed extention yet but I do like this lathe. I like that the tool rest is at an angle to help you rest your tool correctly. It is SUPER heavy, way more than I expected. This helps it to not shake while your wood spins.

Perfect for the n00b who hasn't turned wood before!
I am new to the world of wood turning. I figured I'd dive right in and get down to business. I purchased the mini lathe with the bed extension for a Black Friday sale, received it a week later, and started cranking out Christmas gifts in no time. I also purchased the mini (not pen) carbide turning tools which are a perfect match for this machine.
Changing speeds is very simple as well --- Man this thing is freakin sweet.

Excelsior lathe with bed extension
I bought this lathe specifically to taper walking cane shafts and to do minor turnings on them. The lathe has the length capacity, and motor power to do that and much more. I've tested it using some rough oak staves 37 inches long and far from being balanced. The lathe handled it fine; no vibration or out of control movements. I am now building some custom steady rests for it, in order to turn at higher speeds.

The lathe assembled easily and the extension fitted perfectly with the application of a couple of large "C" clamps to facilitate initial alignment and adjustment of the rubber feet..

For the money, you can't beat this lathe!

Tis a Good Little Lathe.
Beginner wood turner. Received this lathe for Christmas and purchased the bed extension as well as a beginner's gouge set. So far I've turned two goblets and a mallet. Exceeds expectations.

Wanted to get into wood turning without making a huge investment and this tool received good reviews for that purpose. I knew I wanted (and would need) the bed extension so getting it free in this offer was the incentive to purchase.

I own a much older lathe with the same @length, but less swing. Its motor is not built in so rests behind the lathe with its own weight supplying tension to the pulleys. Dominates the space. This is an upgrade to a heavier, more convenient machine with more capacity. I don't need "best in class" but I think this will be a fun tool.

Does this lathe come with ererything you need to make bowls?
Bobby E on Feb 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Aside from the hand tools of your choice (carbides or gouges & skews etc) yes. There are things that will make it easier that you can add. Such as a chuck. If you go to youtube search for a video called "# 180 The basic bowl with Carbide tools". The author shows how to make a bowl with only what comes on a small lathe. He shows a Jet I think but the lathe here is basically the same and comes with the same accessories.. This is a good solid starter lathe.

Is this lathe powerful enough to turn a baseball bat?
Brad S on Feb 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't see why not. I've done spindles in oak as long as a bat. Never had lack of power be a problem with it. As long as you have the extension and the blank will fit on it should not be a problem.

Does this model have a duplicator?
Buddy M on Feb 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not to my knowledge. There may be some generic, work-on-anything, type tools out there. You might look at the Woodcraft and Lee Valley sites to see if they offer anything. Aside from that, simple ones are not that hard to build, if you have basic metalworking skills.
How much of an upgrade would this be from a Shopfox w1704? My shop fox is getting worn out and i would like to upgrade to a better lathe, but im not sure how much more torque this would have for turning bowls
BrianM on Feb 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: So, although I love this lathe, and think the price is pretty good. I really only use it for small bowls and pens mostly. If you are planning on upgrading I would go larger, the swing is only 9 inches. Hope this helps.
I also have a Laguna 18/36, that one is much better for bowls. Happy Shopping
How do you change the belt on Excelsior 1810 lathe?
Ladell G on Mar 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: How to replace the belt.
-Remove protective cover plate (not referenced in the parts list) from the headstock end of #1-Bed. This allows access to the motor pulley.
-Loosen #33 Socket Head Screw and move #31 Motor Plate upward to take tension off #26 Drive Belt.
-Remove #20 Back Lid from #19 Headstock. This allows access to #25 Drive Pulley.
-Loosen #28 Set Screw ...and remove #22 Balance Wheel (left hand threading). This allows access to #14 Headstock Spindle.
-Carefully, with wooden mallet or other means that will not damage the threading, drive out the #14 Headstock Spindle toward the center of the bed.
-Install new belt on #25 Drive Pulley.
-Reverse these steps to reassemble.
