A Great Hack
I fashioned the folding shelf brackets between my table-saw and out-feed table, making the out-feed into a shelf that folds (down) out of the way. No need for out-feed table legs and moving the out-feed table into position. It is part of the saw now.

Very sturdy, highly functional hardware. I question whether we will ever use our drawing table at less than 90 degrees but even if we never do so, we're still happy with it. We bought the longer variety for a 22" wide table and they are working nicely.

RV Table
Needed a strong pair of brackets to hold a heavy 24"x 24" Maple/Cherry table top for our RV camper we are making from a cargo trailer. I'm a shop teacher of 30 years and teach knife making and metals. I know if something is built well or not. I selected the 12 inch vs. the 16" brackets primarily due to price. These are very well made and strong. Worked well. A bit pricey I thought but after seeing videos and reviewing many others I took the plunge and it turned out perfectly for me. You absolutely will find these a great item for holding up a table top on the side of a wall...must hit studs however. In my case I put a 3/4 plywood in between the studs so I could put the table where ever.

Sturdy, Sleek and Strong
These steel brackets are strong enough to hold up thick butcher block extensions to an existing island in my kitchen.
The extensions have increased my work space, and these brackets easily fold down when not in use.

Super strong but alignment is crucial
I used a pair of the 16" version to make a folding shelf (26" X 36"). This will store my push lawn mover / single stage snow blower. In summer the snow blower will be on the shelf and mower on floor under the shelf, In winter it will be reversed with the mower on the shelf and snow blower underneath. This can also be a garage workbench. I rabbited a poplar 1 x 3 and glued to the edge to strengthen and keep them from rolling off.
My tip: I installed using carpenter square and level and still had binding. I installed permanent screws only in the top of the wall brace and nearest the wall on the shelf brace. Then lower the shelf and check for binding. Install remaining wall and shelf screws when positioned for clearance. I used cabinet mounting screws on the wall and 1/4" carriage bolts with no turn washers on the shelf. Works great.
Will not fold like this if not perfectly aligned.
Added 1 x 4 to spread weight on sheet rock.
1/4" x 2" carriage bolts with no turn washers work great.

Folding Shelf Brackets
It's strong, but I need to redo it because it won't go all the way down. I'm told that's because the brackets aren't parallel to each other.

I plan to mount a 60" long x 24" wide sheet of 3/4" thick piece of plywood to make a fold up table. Do I need the the 12" or 16" ones and will 2 of them be sufficient for that length? They will be mounted to 2x4 studs. Thanks.
Bobby on Apr 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Bobby, I just put up a similar shelf in our laundry. Space is at a premium so a folding shelf. I would recommend using 3 brackets 16" long and it's important to use a quality bracket like the one shown here. The first shelf was put up by a contractor using brackets from a big box store. When I had to replace it I used these from Rockler and man what difference. Good Luck
Are these pre-drilled for mounting a shelf with bolts? If so how many holes and what diameter are they?
Chance on Jun 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are 4 pre-drilled holes on the top and 4 pre-drilled hole on the wall mount. The holes are one quarter of an inch (1/4) wide. I used round head screws to attach the brackets in my daughter's house. The area around the holes are flat so I believe you can use bolts. I hope this helps.
Can these be installed so that the shelf folds UP when not in use?

BEST ANSWER: They only fold down when not in use
I'd like to use these on a teak shower seat. Are these brackets suitable for my shower project?
John V on Nov 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The brackets would definitely hold a person or two. Just be careful of rust.
I want to mount this bracket outside. Do I need to poly it first? I live in MN and it will experience weather extremes.
Nicole T on May 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Looks like Kurt has used these and they have held up. Still may not be bad idea to put protective coating on. Just need to make sure to not get the spring mechanism clogged up.
Can these brackets be used on a bench for sitting on in tiny house?
lateresa r on Mar 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Probably. We used them to support a folding worktable that weighs about 100 lbs and routinely has 75-150 lbs of product on it. I would think they could support enough for a bench.
I need to mount a 24"x30" drafting board, will these brackets work?
Samuel P on Jul 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I mounted a 1" thick plywood board 72" x 30". The problem was the top was too deep and I struggled to reach the brace release. Also, the brace would not fold down completely, because I must have been a bit off center, and the brackets are very sensitive to alignment. and the arms catch on the sides of the brace that they are supposed fold into and bind. I have moved, and I trimmed the depth to 24" but not yet mounted it on a wall yet. The previous wall had metal studs.
I'm planning to hang a 36 x 25.5 x 1.5 table top in my laundry room to use for folding laundry. Table top weighs 30 lbs. I'm sure that the 12 inch brackets would hold the weight, but I'm wondering if I should use the 16 inch brackets to make it easier to reach them for unlocking when folding the top down?
Deb on Jun 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You don't state how long your arms are.

If there is any concern at all, other than price, just buy the longer brackets.
Is there a way to connect two brackets so they can both be released simultaneously with one hand? Want to install folding seat but intended user has only one hand...
User U on Apr 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: These brackets need to be lined up just right to snap securely into place. You could try it, but I really do not think a person could snap both brackets together with one hand.
Can these brackets be painted?
Brigitta B on Aug 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have 4 of them but have not tried to paint them. They don't seem to have any coating on them so proper priming ans painting should work
Do these lock in the 90 degree position and when folded down?
Blake K on Apr 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They lock in the 90 degree position and also at approximately 70 and 80 degrees, but not at any lesser angles.
Where is the release lever for this product? Is it simple press lever or some type of button release? I just don't see the lever in the photo above.
Marc A on May 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Marc, this has a press lever about 2 inches from the end. I used 2 of these brackets on a folding table (wall mounted) in my laundry room. You press, then lift slightly, then folds down. It does have a stopping point midway as I am dropping down.
I am building a cutting board with cabinet storage underneath--for storage reasons I must drop leaf part of the board. Will your folding bracket provide true alignment when raised to a horizontal position?
Jesse S on Jul 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: yes mine worked great just take your time lining up your brackets and keeping them square to your work . once you have predrilled your holes tighten screws slowly and adjust as you go ,maybe a little tweeking here and there , mine are workig great
are these brackets sold in pairs???
Ralph P on Jun 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No. I have these brackets in my work shop and office. They are extremely strong and easy to install.
to release the lock, do you need to press both hinge buttons at the same time?
Andrew A on Jun 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Lift slightly, press the button and hold. Slowly lower the supported item till fully unloaded and release button.
Can the brackets support a shelf 48 in wide x 36 in deep?
Mary Jo P on Jul 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: A pair of these are some of the strongest I have found and handel a lot of weight. The brackets will handle this size of shelf, but the problem is the amount of weight you put on this shelf. That is an exceptionally deep shelf for a 16" brackets. storing blankets and such would be no problem, but wouldn't recommend people sitting on a shelf this size..
Would these be overkill if a bought four of them and used them on a moderately 4' X 4' table? Table top could be 50 lbs or more.
Daryl P on Nov 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don’t really know. I usually overbuild things myself so I believe having 4 instead of 2 is more piece of mind. Hope this helps
Is this usable outside? If not do you have a version that is? Thanks
Pratibha S on Oct 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This can be used outdoors, however, as they are not stainless steel I would limit the exposure to the elements.
max. spacing between brackets for a 12" deep shelve in a closet application?
Alan P on Sep 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would judge that by the shelf material, and how thick it is. Anything you use will sag beyond a couple of feet, the wider the spacing, more it will sag, and this will depend on how much weight is placed on the shelf. Almost any shelf will sag a little, even left empty. A 1 x 2 fastened to the wall at the back of the shelf will help some.
For mounting on concrete, how far apart should the brackets be placed?
M M on Apr 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know. I thought I was. Getting a pair for the cost but I was wrong so I never used it.
To answer your question, it seems sum what sturdy so it probably depends on the top and how sturdy it is
Can I mount these to the back of a wood door in order to have a small shelf that folds down on one side? Also, to release and push the self down will I need to press each release on every lever separate to fold the shelf down? Or how does the shelf fold down and up?
Marc A on May 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you could mount it on a door I guess. Both brackets do have to be released to fold it down.
I want to make a 4-inch to 6-inch-deep fold-down/fold-up shelf to support hot water pots (1-liter capacity) temporarily while filling them from the hot water dispenser in our church kitchen's coffee maker. (The hot water spout is roughly flush with the front edge of the kitchen counter.) Can I shorten the horizontal legs of these supports to fit a shelf that is no more than 6 inches deep? I can reinforce the back of the cabinet face to support the hinge mounts, but do not have the room for a shelf to extend 12 inches into the kitchen walkway/work area, even temporarily.
Jon S on Feb 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They make these in two sizes. You can cut a little off the end but on the larger ones the mechanism is longer than 6".
Are these suitable for outdoor use?
Glenn S on Jul 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This can be used in a garage or some other enclosed area but not out in the elements
I installed the 16" and when folded down it is not flat - is it supposed to fold flat?
Richard H on Jun 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: They will fold flat if installed exactly perpendicular to the horizontal surface which they support.
I'm curious to see if the brackets can be flipped around for a drop down table, so the top folds down toward the floor (kind of like a Murphy bed)? Thanks!
Matt O on Apr 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Is designed to drop down as pictured, not sure exactly what you are asking.
What is the advantage and disadvantages of folding brackets?
Anh55 on Feb 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The advantage of the folding bracket is giving us a temporary work surface in a small work space. We do not have the room for a fixed work surface, so this works perfectly. I do not see any disadvantages.
I have a span at the end of my garage that's approx 9', perfect for a folding shelf. I'd like to make it 20" deep. Is this too big? How many 16" brackets should I get? What would be a good, durable top?
Pierre S on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There are a few variables that you will have to consider. First what are you going to use it for and how much weight will be on it? Second, what are you going to make it out of? Being 9 foot it will be hard to use sheet goods. Without knowing these items, I would not space the brackets any further than 24" OC.
When folded closed, what is the measurement between the two surfaces it is mounted to?
Todd M on Jun 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: one inch between the two surfaces.
I replace the front entrance door of my house. The old door is plain, and instead of throwing it away, I thought about make it to a secondary work bench in my garage and using these folding brackets. Will this support my idea?
Thomas A on Mar 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes,excellent idea, just so they are attached to studs
Can this be secured to metal studs?
pjcorrigan12 on Jan 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would say no unless some kind of blocking is in the wall.
