Bought this for my mini lathe and ended up using it on the lathe to hold a drill bit to drill out some brass rod and center an 8-32 Tap to make some custom gun cleaning rods.

Lathe chuck and tapers
I am glad I ordered these; they have been used much more than I ever expected to. Getting a good start on hollowing is vital, and these tools make the job fast and easy. Nicely done Rockler.

Robust and Works Great
I bought this because the store employee recommended it and showed my how it works with different mandrels. I'm new to turning and was thinking I needed to spend a lot more money to accomplish what I was trying to do. So instead of buying a more expensive set of jaws, he helped me understand why this part would fit my needs better, and as I expand my turning abilities I can move up to a set of jaws for my Excelsior lathe.

I need a chuck for an old Craftsman Drill press. The quill on the press has a short taper, about 1 inch long, 5/8 in on the large end, 9/16 on the small end. I wonder if this chuck will fit my press?
Steve S on Dec 30, 2015
The chuck itself keeps vibrating off of the taper. How do you keep it on? The one end of the taper seems secured in the lathe but the chuck will not stay secured to the opposite end. I'm using it with a simple bottle stopper mandrel.
shopper on Nov 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Your chuck isn't on the taper true. Knock it on a little harder with a mallet or hammer/block while the jaws are completely open.

Use a trustworthy straight piece of steel dowel stock or a non taper drill bit you don't mind getting bent and spin it up in the chuck. Check the dowel or drill it with a dial gauge while you spin it by hand.

Tap the rod accordingly, extremely gently. It takes a surprisingly light tap to adjust.

That'll work 90% of the time. If it doesn't, use a bearing press. Go slowly and make sure it's going on straight and mind not to bend the spindle.
What is the taper on opposite end of the mt2?
A shopper on Jun 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Look up "Machine Taper" on Wikipedia. There is a table that gives the dimensions for Morse Taper 2 units. Note that some MT1 units are a bit longer than specified and if you use an adapter, say from MT1 to MT2, you may have to slightly shorten the MT1 unit.
Does this come assembled?
A shopper on Aug 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No. You must place the chuck onto the taper. Make sure you order the proper taper that matches your lathe.
What is the taper shaft size that the chuck mounts to? It looks like the morse taper is a separate part. Since these are also sold seperately, they must be two parts...
What is the shaft diameter of the morse taper shoulder that the chuck mounts to? ....assuming this comes in two parts. Looking for a 5/8" jacobs chuck
jshirey on Apr 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: These are sold separately. We offer the morse taper in a #1(20785) and a #2(20793)
The #1MT is much smaller and fits most older model Craftsman lathes
The #2MT is what most lathes will be using.
Can you drill a 2.5 inch hole with this chuck?
Kevin C on Jan 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I’ve gone up to 2inches w forstner bit. I think with the right bit and slow speed it would do 2.5. It’s solid
Looking for confirmation: Have a Jett 1221 Lathe and looking for a drill chuck. Am I correct that I must order the chuck PLUS the taper as two separate items?
Bill D on Jun 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Bill you are correct the chuck will come with the key and depending on your lathe you will also need to order a MT#1 or MT#2 taper
I have a Nova Comet II midi lathe... Which taper will it take?
iabeef on Dec 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If it was manufactured recently it is most likely a #2 Morris Taper.
Best to check with the manufacturer's website.
What threading is needed to hold the Morse taper in the lathe?
A shopper on Apr 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There are no threads on this morse taper. It is held in place by friction.

BEST ANSWER: A different supplier offers a 1"x8 tpi with MT2 tailstock chuck adapter but I have not seen one from Rockler.
what is the diameter of the non tapered end ?
dochoop on Apr 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The answer is that there is no non tapered end, the entire shaft is tapered..
It appears to be a #2 morse taper, so the entire shaft is tapered and there are no non tapered diameters.
The lathe chuck with taper is stuck in the lathe, what is the best way to loosen for removal?
George F on Feb 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Enter an answer to this question. You should have a rod that goes into either the headstock or the tail stock. Put the rod in place and gently tap the chuck out.
