Rockler Miniature Dovetail Template & Bit Kit

Creates dovetails for small-box projects.
Item #
58% of 100
For years, dovetails have been a classic choice for joining medium and larger sized panels - this kit finally makes them an option for small-box projects as well! Create gorgeous 1/4" through dovetails with tight 1/2" or 5/8" spacing (on center) in stock ranging from 1/4" to just 1/8" thick. The set includes a template, two miniature 1/8" shank router bits, a reducer to adapt your router, and a template guide.

Attaches quickly and easily to the Rockler Dovetail Jig (#22818, sold separately).

No other template allows for dovetail spacing this tight. It works with panels up to 5-1/2" wide - perfect for a great range of small-box projects.

I like it fine

I could not believe how easy it was to make the small dovetail joints now, before I was having so much trouble and now I could not be any happier unless someone else was doing it for me. What a great pleasure it is seeing the finished project.

Woodworking Experience:
Nice template
Just used this today. Love the tiny little dovetails it makes. It's very easy to use. The trac sticks a bit in the jig and it makes it difficult to adjust other than that good value.

The first box I made using...
The first box I made using the small dovetail cutter was better than I expected. The dovetail cutter chattered, no matter how slowly I cut. The chatter was from the dovetail bit flexing. The next box, I used the straight cutter first on the dovetail tails and then the dovetail bit, which made the cutting easier and quicker. I am very satisfied with the system. I did break the straight cutter, but I did not have it in the router properly.

Instructions are a bit cryptic and difficult to follow.1/8 in. dovetail bit broke off in middle of shank while dovetailing soft pine. This while exerting little force on router. Expensive to replace, considering it will have to be replaced often.

Mechanically the template works fine. But...
Mechanically the template works fine. But I was disappointed that the embossed icons on the metal were hardly visible. The template had to be moved around to just the right angle of light reflection so the icons would be visible. It's a real inconvenience when the template is installed in the jig, to have to remove it to see which side creates which dovetail set.Editor's clarification: Template is phenolic rather than metal as reviewer notes. Printing on template is laser engraved etching of the phenolic surface. Viewing printing to select a side would be done before installing in jig rather than after. And of course, good shop lighting is always important.

I am a jewlery box builder and I purchased the mini jig setup to make the trays. When it works it's great. It makes nice fitting dovetails. The problem is that the bits are too short to go completly into collet so they creep out when under load, break and destroy the piece. Rockler has replaced the broken bits but the down time is killing me. Please make the bits longer and I suspect you will have a good product. Loyal customer.

Save your money..two broken bits [with 1/8th "white oak] going extremely slow & careful, you have to cobble on a 1/2" shim and be familar with the jig to even figure out how to adjust it. For every other size this jig is the easiest and BEST I've to about 10" but I love it!

Short bits
The router bits are too short, even with the collet 1/16" from the bushing. I tried and tried to compensate by not have the bit completely seated, but after a couple cuts, the bit would begin to slip no matter how hard I tightened it. love Rockler, but this cost me a day that I will never get back.

I purchased the Rockler dovetailer several years ago and it has been the best unit of the four previous brands that I used. This template just adds to my collection of options to make drawers.

I have the rocker miniature dovetail kit. My my brass template guide is in bad shape and I was wondering if I could purchase a new one. It is a 1/4" od ?
Ken M on Dec 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I just ordered one call the 800 number and talk to tech support. Sounds strange but Renee was very helpful.
Will the mini dovetail template adapt to different jigs?
Kerry R. M on Feb 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure as I have only used the Rockler jig.
What is the diameter of the router bit at its widest point please?
PJ999 on Jul 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The diameter of the dovetail cutter is 1/4"(ie it leaves an opening that is 1/4" at its widest point). The diameter of the shaft of the bit is 1/8". The shafts of the upgraded cutter kit are 8mm, and a special collar is included to adapt those to a 1/2" collet.
What is the depth of cut of the bit? Anyone know the angle of the dovetail router bit please?
PJ999 on Jul 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There was a depth guide on the side of my jig. a picture of the bit and the depth it should be.
It says 1/4" through 1/8" thick material, will it do 5/16" by chance? The regular templates only go down to 3/8".
Amos O on Feb 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I really can’t say! Have not tried that but it probably will work if you take it very slow and use wood that is not really hard!
Has Rockler up dated this router bit to make it work correctly? I am concerned about the negative comments on this item.
Douglas on Feb 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The issue I have is with the 1/4 to 1/8 inch collet reducer and not specifically the bit. Because there’s no flange around the edge, the reducer itself can drop down into the collet and, in the case of my Dewalt DWP611 compact router, it can get jammed. The collet, reducer and bit are unrecoverable.
