Ordinarily, if you wanted to do faceplate turning off the end of your lathe, you would have to remove the heavy tailstock. This swingaway accessory eliminates the hassle and potential danger of removing the tailstock by allowing it to swing away on a hinged pivot point. Simply loosen the handle and it slides down and out of the way. After you're done, pull the tailstock back up to the bed and lock it into place.
