Hard to Set up, But great once in use.
This is a beast to set up but once in place it is very solid to use. I am very pleased. I like the cross hatching lasers and light for detailed work.

Woodworking Experience:
Powermatic at its best
Don't even consider any other drill press! I've tested and inspected a handful of drill presses before purchasing this and nothing stands up to this one. Yes it's a little pricey but wait for the sale. It's worth it. Set-up took approx 1 hour. Piece of advice, assemble the head laying down and tip it up and do final adjustments when up rite. I operate a small part time custom cabinet and furniture shop and this is now a indispensable piece of equipment to my shop. Purchase one. It will be the last drill press you purchase. Enjoy

Woodworking Experience:
It is everything I expected
Runs very smooth and quiet. Variable speed is really great especially with the digital readout. The quality of the machine is outstanding and built to last.

Woodworking Experience:
I don't know how I ever managed without this wonderful tool. It lives up to all the billing and more. It's super easy to use and the variable speed is a must. Setting the depth of cut couldn't be easier. And there's plenty of travel to get through any project. It's a bit heavy though, and when they say get a helper to apply the head, they mean it. I was able to lay the pole on it's side and attach the head while resting in the box. Pushing it up to vertical took all I had though. Tough, durable, functional.

Woodworking Experience:
Variable speed better than changing belts
Replaces an old off brand bench drill press.

After getting a replacement for defective laser, drill press works well, with the exception of a little more runout (play) in the operation than I would like. A 1/16” bit shows some wobble at all speeds.

The variable speed feature is great.

I am still not comfortable enough with laser positioning to trust it without running the bit (non rotating) down to the intended drill point.
, but it is good for preliminary setup.

Woodworking Experience:
Bought this to upgrade from my ~20 yr old Delta 14", Every part of this machine is heavy. Instructions make it seem that it is very easy to assemble, with 2 people required to put the head on.

I found that 2 people are needed for most of the assembly, especially putting the table on. Like the previous review, I put he head on by leaving it in the box and sliding the post into it. I needed 2 helpers to right it, 2 to lift and 1 to prevent the base from sliding across the floor.

While the machine is spectacular, I am giving it 4 stars as it cannot be completely turned off - the power light and speed indicator are always on.

Woodworking Experience:
Not as expected
I was much enthused by reviews of this drill press so I decided to buy one. Oops. The poor fit and finish and the noisy drive were totally unexpected. I don't think PM applied their "Gold Standard" to the one I received and am dubious of their products.

I have been searching/waiting for years for a drill press that includes all the features the Powermatic now has. Time to retire the drill press feature of my Shop Smith Mark V.

are powermatic tools made in usa?
lannie l on Nov 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I believe they are made in Taiwan, typically better than China. I have a Powermatic PM2000, 54HH jointer and PM2800B drill press. The manufacturing quality is quite acceptable.
Would this drill press be appropriate in a metal shop or is it designed more for a wood shop ?
Rich B on Nov 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have both metal (Bridgeport mill, Logan lathe) and wood (Powermatic PM2000, 54HH jointer, Laguna 1412 bandsaw) and this drill press. It doesn't know whether you are working with wood or metal. Plenty of power and accuracy. In fact, the taper on the spindle is MT2 which matches the Logan tailstock, so I can interchange multiple chucks between lathe and press.
I am looking for a Drill Press and was considering Jet, Grizzly and Powermatic. I love the features of the Powermatic and was curious how stable the table is as per rigid?
Gary K on Aug 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I purchased the Powermatic on sale but bolted on a wider base of 3/4 MDF to add stability,
The variable speed motor saves changing belt arrangements and the light and cross hair work very well. The only part I may change to later is a keyed chuck to grip the bits better. In the meantime I use Milwaukee identical sized hex shank bits which prevent slippage and make changing from one size to the next quick.

Also added Mobile base under the wider wood base and it works very well together. Just added the Rockler fence with dust port and hooked it up to Dewalt hepa vac w auto power switch so the vac turns on and off w drill press. The table is excellent. Very large and stable and easy to raise or even tilt.
I highly recommend the Powermatic, and view it as the last drill press I will need to buy.
Good luck

Can the quill be locked in a fixed position? ie to use a small drum sander near table surface.
John H on Mar 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not sure about that but the table can be raised or lowered and locked in position relative to the drum sander.
Is any of this made in the USA or just CHINA / other?!?

BEST ANSWER: All of these tools are made in Taiwan, to very strict Quality Control standards of Jet/Powermatic. They are of very high quality. For a number of reasons, there aren't many power tools currently made in the USA, although some are assembled here. Perhaps this will change in the future.
Is it possible to have a larger motor installed? Such as a 1 1/2hp, or 2hp?
Ron L on Jun 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Ours has a 1 hp motor. We have not needed more. If you could match up shaft size and motor mount locations I think you could put a larger motor. my concern would be the possibility of the morse taper in the chuck slipping and becoming damaged.
