I could not install quadrant hinges without this jig. The quadrant hinges look great in a jewelry box.

Must have tool
You have to use this template when using the Jig It system. In the past I made my own templates for mortising but never again! I highly recommend buying this along with the Jig It Mortising system for serious woodworkers.

Incredible Accuracy
The last step for an intricate jewelry box is installing quadrant hinges and without this jig that becomes a highly stressful ordeal. The Jig-It takes the worry away and delivers beautiful results. Good idea to buy some bench cookies to make the set up even easier.

Template cut out slots not equal
Set up Q3. template as directed. Right side cuts work correctly, however the left side cuts 1/16th inch shorter- both in the “A” position and the “B” position. Nothing to adjust to make both sides equal. It appears that Q3 needs recut to make equal cuts.
Other than this the template would be a great aid.

Well designed, but poorly executed. The center bar should be made of metal, with the threaded hole accurately machined. Inserts pressed into plastic are not accurate. There is no forgiveness in the installation of quadrant hinges.

Probably won't rout the mortise, but using the template to get a clean layout for chisel work.

wanted to try it on hinges I have to see if it easier to install. Price is reasonable so not much risk here.

Because of the complexity of quadrant hinge I'm in need of a template. Unfortunately but requires a special insert for each and every hinge used.

can the catch arm work with a 3/4" solid top ? in lieu of drilling the top deep mortise, can it be 1/2" vs 1" and just lengthen the bottom hole?
tom s on Nov 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have used these with several boxes with tops less than 3/4". My box tops are usually between 5/8 and 3/4 depending on how much I have to plane them down and I have never had a problem. The top mortise is only a bit more than 1/4" for clearance but there is a hook on top that you have to do a mortise for; you cannot simply lengthen the bottom. One problem I do have is on the edge where I have put a decorative router edge on the box I have tapped the screw holes a bit deep on a couple cases so that is something to look out for if you have a decorative edge.
I purchased the Jig IT Hinge Mortising System (#58822) and the Q3 Large Quadrant Hinge Mortise Template (#51331) to go with it. I also purchased the Solid Brass Large-Box Quadrant Hinge set (#24300.) I am using a 3/16" straight router bit (#90000) and the 3/8" O.D. guide bushing (#43877) along with the locking nut (#63107) in my plunge router. I routed a text board as the instructions recommended but the routed slot for the hinge is too narrow. What am I missing?
David J on Nov 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Double checking, all of the part numbers you gave are a correct match, and they should work together successfully. The only thing that I can think of is that when you cut the slot, you may need to do a complete circuit of the opening in the template to make an initial cut then widen it just a little bit with the pass up the other side of the template opening (it's hard to know the fit without being there.). You didn't mention how much too narrow the slot is. I do know that it's a pretty snug fit, so any variation in hinge width or guide bushing size, or angle of router (must be 90 deg.) would introduce a little variation in the slot size, though it would be a small one. Hope this helps, but it's hard to diagnose without being there.
I have built a shadow box to hang on the wall, 16 by 19 inches. I'll be putting glass in the door, which needs to be hinged. The wood is 3/4 inch thick. I'm wondering if the quadrant hinges work for this project? It looks like they are usually used on boxes that sit flat on a table, not one that hang on the wall. Also, if quadrant hinges work, should I use large or small? Looks like large is best?.. thanks.. Tom
Tommy H on Aug 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I think it would on hanging box.make sure template is anchored securly use a small size pluge router
