Straddles your board to mark a perfectly centered line, or you can use the notches to mark offset lines from 1/16'' to 1/2'' from the edge in 1/16'' increments.

Rockler Center/Offset Marking Tool

Item #
90% of 100

Our Center/Offset Marking Tool straddles your board to mark a perfectly centered line along the face or edge of boards up to 1-1/2'' wide or thick. Just insert your pencil into the center hole, rotate the tool so the guide posts contact the material, then scribe. Alternatively, you can use a pencil in the notches to mark lines from 1/16'' to 1/2'' from the edge in precise 1/16'' increments. It's great for marking out mortises and rabbets, or for making reference lines for drilling holes. The tool accepts standard wooden pencils and has an onboard pencil storage slot. An embedded magnet lets you store it on any ferrous metal surface, such as a power tool, tool chest or magnetic storage strip.

  • Fits standard wooden pencils
  • Center hole holds pencil in perfectly centered position as you scribe your line
  • Notches for offset marking let you scribe off-center lines, or lines near the edge of large panels
  • Offset notches account for the tip width of a sharpened pencil for an accurately scribed line
  • Integral magnet allows easy storage on ferrous metal surfaces
  • This item ships UPS ground only

Too easy!
I have used a combination square for this for years. Measure the piece and then calculate what is half. Then set the ruler on the square to that measurement. My eyesight is not what it used to be so I have to use a magnifying glass to set the ruler. UGH! This super simple device gives you the halfway mark every time. It also helps you mark offsets. SO MUCH EASIER THAN USING A RULER.

Such a handy tool.
Center marking couldn't be easier. No more measuring and hoping you have it right. Perfect every time. So simple to use.
Being able to stick it up when not in use is an add bonus. Wish I found it sooner.

Rockler Center/Offset Marking Tool
I really like the ability to find the center of drilling or cutting wood project pieces with this tool. I also like the fact that it is magnetic so I keep it handy on my band saw and it also has a hole to keep a pencil handy too.

Does it come in metric?
Danny B on Nov 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It makes no difference. It finds the perfect center every time if used properly. Before You would use a rule or measuring tape and mark several points and then line them up. Then take a Straight Edge and connect your marks. This tool is so simple that its value can be easily overlooked. I have tools that ran up into the hundreds when they where new. Somebody was really thinking when this came to mind.
Is there a tool for a 3/4" offset? I need to follow a 48"R arc.
jmotlagh on Jul 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Most speed squares have a 3/4" notch that can be used to scribe this measurement. It is the smallest notch on most speed squares and goes up from there.
Where can I buy your tools from in the UK please . Thank you from andy w.?
andy wright on Feb 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This not a product question at all from Andy. Purchasing Rockler products locally in the UK could be nearly impossible, but I believe Rocklers will deliver/ship to UK. Please contact Rockler's directly Andy
Would this work on round stock?
Nikonguy on Jan 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You could but you would need to set up a stop on one side to keep it from rolling over the round stock.
What is the maximum lumber size this device will stradle?
Alan W on Dec 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: A 2x4 not much more.. Great for finding center of doors fast.
Can this be used to make a parallel line along the face of a round table?
Pamela S on Feb 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I would say Yes to this question. If there is a flat top to sit on, you would be able to create several lines even with the edge of the table. That is on a round table. I would think that it would not work on an oval table.
I have the Rockler Center/Offset Marking Tool, but unfortunately a normal pencil will not fit in the provided hole (too small), unless I have a defective one. So, my question is where can I find the correct size pencil?
Gary on Dec 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The opening is too small for most round #2 pencils so I use the hexagon shaped ones for a perfect fit. The one I buy is a DixonTiconderoga #2 HB. They're inexpensive and also a good general shop pencil to have around. These can be purchased just about anywhere and there are other brands out there that'll work as well.
