I'm not a woodworker so decided...
I'm not a woodworker so decided to turn a metal pen, my first by the way. I think I made a good choice in going with the black chrome on a scrap stainless steel rod. I did notice slight wear on both sides of the spacer but it seems to be negligible.

The black chrome finish lasted about...
The black chrome finish lasted about 1 week with normal use. I wish I could use the wood I used in the kit on a higher quality pen kit. I ended up giving the pen to my 7 year old son since the mechanics are still working well.
