Do I need a template or guide to mortise for a hinge?
Thomas C on Jul 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have used a template (jig) and free hand. I prefer free hand. I draw the outline of the hinge on the wood. I use a chisel to score the outline. Then I use a small router to cut the mortise, erring on the side of being shy of my chisel lines. Then I clean up what's left (and corners) with a sharp small chisel.
Practice makes perfect. You will want to practice this 10 or 15 times before you use it.
Is the bearing the exact size as the blade? I'd like the bit to cut the exact size as the template.
