Bench Dog No. 4-1/2 Smoothing Plane

Remove the thinnest of shavings with this premium smooth plane—slightly wider and heavier than the No. 4 for more heft.
Item #
82% of 100

Bench Dog's No. 4-1/2 smoother takes the thinnest of shavings for an exceptionally fine finish. When compared to the smaller No. 4, this plane has a heftier feel, ideal for challenging grain. Its blade is also 3/8'' wider than the No. 4, which works well for edge planing thick lumber. Used skillfully, it can be the final step before finishing, and it also makes a good general-purpose plane. Quality materials, precision machining and solid construction result in a hand plane that's an absolute pleasure to use. The sole is precision ground flat. The blade is made from thick 1/8'' hardened carbon steel for reduced chatter and excellent edge retention. Solid sapele is used for the comfortable tote and knob, adding a touch of elegance. Each plane includes a case, sock, manual and a Certificate of Inspection with measurements specific to your plane for sole flatness and blade hardness.

  • Ideal for surface finishing and final smoothing
  • Ductile cast iron body for superior strength and resistance to impact
  • Adjustable frog lets you narrow the blade opening for fine shavings
  • Easy depth-of-cut adjustment and lateral blade adjustment
  • Solid brass cap iron and threaded fittings for smooth action
  • Sole of plane and back of blade are flat to tight tolerances
  • Blade and sole are treated with a protective layer of oil
  • Certificate of Inspection included for each tool
  • Minimal setup and tuning required before use

Woodworking Experience:
excellent after little work
sole had a few small pits but doesn't really hurt anything. Planes are made in india and I think assembled by children for I have a small fingerprint on the brass that doesn't come out? The back of the blade was pretty much flat and took very little honing to get it flat. The bevel was at 25 degrees and to get a sharp edge took about 15minutes. The frog though will need some work for it doesn't marry to the blade tight so you get shavings under it in one corner. I am not sure what the blade is made of but will probably change with a vertitas one. If you are new to hand planes I would suggest a different one because of the work, which I would mention, is usually needed on used planes. Also the adjustment of the blade is excellent although the lateral adjustment needed a little bending to make it mate good. Once I tuned it up it will take about 3/4 of a thousandth shaving.

Woodworking Experience:
Needs decent amount of setting up, but performs fine once done
Out of the box, the blade was cupped and needed more work than just sharpening/honing so make full contact with chipbreaker. The chip breaker relief angle was not enough to ensure full contact with the blade and being rounded off, it actually created a void for shavings to get clogged. Spent a couple hours to fine tune the blade and chip breaker. The sole was as flat as my straight edge. The adjustments have a noticeable play. Once properly sharpened and setup the tool made shavings as fine as any high end plane. 5 stars for performance after setup, 3 stars on adjustments, and 2 star on out of box.

I would have liked the frog to extend all the way to the sole, if you tried minimized the mouth size, the frog overhangs the sole, so the blade isn't fully supported down to the sole.

Starting to use more hand tools. I have a block plane and need to move on to the larger planes. The 4 1/2 Smoothing plane seemed to be the right place to start with the larger planes.

Is the frog adjustment set-up similar to the Stanley bedrock planes?
Nathan H on Aug 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You need to remove the blade/cap to get to the screws underneath the blade/on top of the frog to release the tension on frog for adjustment.
when you write a review not so positive, why doesn't it show??
