Woodworking Experience:
Very pleased --
This jig is a must-have shop item for flat chisel/turning tool sharpening. I use it with my whet stones and it's easy to set up and use. It firmly holds the blade edge flat, providing an even and razor-sharp edge on all of my chisels and small blades. I occasionaly rub across the threads and bars with paraffin to lubricate for easier use. Better than any other jig I've used ,in over 50 years of woodworking.

I've seen several youtube videos praising this simple guide, and how easy it is to hand-machine it so it's just right. Sharp tools are essential.

Brian L on Jun 26, 2019
I want to learn how to use hand planes instead of sanding ... from what I hear, you better be sharp. Obviously, I'm unable to consistently eye a perfect hone, as I doubt many are. This should help.

tony b on Sep 29, 2015
can this sharpen at angles up to 45 degrees? does anyone know of one that can?
Steve O on Oct 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I agree with Stanley. I think it could if the blade doesn't extend too far from the guide. This wouldn't work on my chisels though so I returned it and ordered another. I see that I can't refer to other stores so I can't say from where, but the registration guide shows it allows high angles up to 54 degrees on the correct setting. It's quite a bit more expensive than this guide though. Try doing an internet search for "high angle honing guide" and see if that helps.
I saw a video on how to modify this honing guide. My question is: "Why wasn't it designed properly in the first place"?
Bob on Feb 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not all honing guides of this design need modification. Most do as they "peak" as they are tightened on a plane iron and need to be modified. Also, you may find that the chisel portion of the guide does not secure your chisels correctly thus requiring modification. You could also purchase a guide that will work without modification for a substantially higher price. Lie-Nielsen guides go for over $100.
is the guide all metal?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Everything is metal except for the knob used for tightening which is pressed on plastic
What are the measurements for the right honing angles lost the paper that came with guide?
CHRISTOPHER P on Apr 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The measurements provided are just a guide for a starting point as not all chisels or plane blades have the same bevel angle so adjustments may be required. When you clamp a chisel or plane blade in the tool, set it on a flat surface and look from the side to see if the bevel is laying flat. if not you need to adjust in or out till it does. If all your blades have the same bevel angle, you can make a guide block that can be used to setup the length of blades extension the same every time. The are many examples on the WEB.
Will it sharpen craftsman tapered shank chisels?
Jim G on Apr 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Most likely not, it's best suited for wood chisels and plane blades because it needs a long enough blade to grip and get the right angle.
