This is an awesome lathe!
I bought an AMT lathe about 44 years ago when I was a med student. It sold back then for less than $100. You can still find them for a few hundred on eBay. It's main advantage (except for price) over the Jet lathe is that the rails are just 3/4" pipes, so I could use pipes of whatever length needed to turn bed posts for a canopy bed that were almost 8 feet in length! The disadvantages were many in that those rails results in a lack of stability. Over the years, the lathe bearings got very noisy. The lathe's main shaft had a lot of vibrations and the tail stock kept slipping. The vibrations would cause the jaws of the chuck to loosen its hold on the turning piece. I know, "you get what you pay for."

The Jet lathe is awesome in comparison. It is so quiet and smooth. The same chuck does not vibrate at all and the turned piece never needs re-tightening. After the piece is turned, it is so smooth that it doesn't need much sanding. Pieces that took me almost an hour to produce now get done in 1/2 hour.

This is a really heavy unit (220 pounds just for the lathe itself). I got the legs in case this lathe wouldn't fit or if I couldn't lift it onto a 4x8 work bench. Getting it on the work bench required the use of a 1 ton shop crane that I already had from HF. My wife helped me get it onto the table. Then I secured it to the top with their 5/16" hex screws, which took me a good hour to line up. If planning to use the legs, expect to use the lathe where you assemble it (the legs weigh 65 pounds each) and not be able to move this easily. The option is to install Rockler casters on it. This is a tall lathe and I'm only 63" tall. Whether using the legs and casters or mounting it on a 31" tall work bench, the problem would be the same. I needed to build a long step (7" high) in order to work over the lathe. My step is about 50" long and 11 1/4" wide. If you are close to 6' tall, you shouldn't need one.

Jet wood lathe
I absolutely love this machine. Very easy to use and change configuration. The speed control is very nice and easy to change. It will make you a better wood turner.

Woodworking Experience:
Easy and as described.
Easy to assemble, can do it alone but a second strong back helps. Works as described. Fit of parts is great, finish is good but still see casting flaws.

Jet 1440 VS floor lathe
I like the lathe. It is well - built.

What I am unhappy about is that the bolts and washers used to connect the legs to the bed were missing, as were the adjustable feet.

Can I put casters on it?
MWDIlday on Apr 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can put casters on the lathe. I put them on mine as I work out of my garage most of the time. It makes it much easier to move around because of the weight of the lathe. Just make sure you get the casters rated for the weight. It’s an awesome lathe.
Does Jet have a Direct drive motor, and does iit replaced a Headstock on a 1440vs?
Matt L on May 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not sure if I understand the question. The head stock and motor are connected. Spindle is driven by a serpentine belt.. This controls the speed. The motor can be removed but the pulley that is on the shaft would have to be removed. look on U TUBE for the instructions.
What is the thread on the spindle? How do I know what chuck to get with out that information?
Matt K on Jan 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The thread on the spindle is 8 per inch. This information is in the owners' manual that you can download as a PDF file from Jet for free. I just googled it and was able to download the whole manual. Also might be helpful for you to know this lathe is a No 2 MT.
What size/style belt does this lathe use?
Brandon H on May 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The replacement belt for this lathe is Jet part number JWL1442-141.
What is the amps?
rexconbob on Jan 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 1 horsepower motor should draw 6-7amps with a 120VAC source. Half that for a 240VAC source but you may need to rewire the motor.
A 15amp circuit breaker will work OK, 20 amp would be better yet.
If you plan to run it on an extension cord, then get 12AWG (wire gauge) or better yet, 10AWG.
Has anyone purchased the drop down extension with the post to turn larger diameter items?
