Professional level drill press
I'm a retired tool and die maker. This drill press is well made, solid, strong, and precise. With 1/2" precision ground drill rod in the chuck, there was less than .005 runout, and less than that in 3 inches of travel of the spindle. Pretty darned good for right out the box....and you don't have to get your hands dirty changing pulleys! The laser cross hairs and digital readout are also very handy. Big features in a compact package.

Woodworking Experience:
A great addition to any shop!
I started with an entry level, low quality drill press while determining if I wanted to embark on my woodworking journey. I have since found that it is good to graduate to a better quality set of tools and equipment. I would recommend this drill press to all. A real workhorse.

Woodworking Experience:
Jet JWDP-12 Drill Press
I spent several months looking for the right drill press for my needs and I felt this was the best drill press for my budget and garage shop. I just finished using it to put in Blum self-closing hinges on some cabinet doors I am making for my daughter’s laundry room. I used a make shift drill press table but I see I need for a real table at some point. Thought the drill press was extremely easy to set up for one person. Did have to slightly adjust the laser light but all and all I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

jet 12 in. drill press
after unpacking and setting up I found that a wrong arbor was sent with the drill press. called the jet customer service # and they had one in the mail the next day. have not used it much yet but really like changing the speed without having to change belt positions. satisfied with both the rockler & jet co.

Jet 12" Drill Press
Well packed, & nothing broken. Setup/Assembly was straightforward & documentation that didn't read like Chinese spun through Google Translator.- THAT was impressive. This replaced a Porter Cable benchtop drill press that was absolutely dismal. Smooth & powerful, doesn't bog down, a handle to change speeds & an RPM readout. Rock solid chuck & spindle. No complaints whatsoever, & 5 stars.
Jet is doing it right.

Great Drill Press
Great features , east to set up & good instructions. The table height adjust is somewhat flimsy, but that is knit picking. I would buy it again. The speed adjust, digital speed indication, laser sighting with on/off switch, and LED light with on/off switch - A++

Good deal and so far so good.
Ups delivered ok in good shape . Unpacked it ,was all there. It was easy to assemble, had it up and running in less than 30 min . So far it has met all my expectations. People we complaining the rpm indicator never went off , they fixed that it goes out 5 seconds after I turned it off. The laser is right on and the light works great . Very satisfied so far . It was a great buy it was on sale as well.
Made a table for it .
So far so good .

I didn't want to get a low end floor model or pay the price for a middle/upper end floor model. This unit seems to be a high end bench top model. It should meet my hobbyist needs and fall within my budget.

Chris S on Jul 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Clean both places slap it back in
The info for this new press says it has 1/2 HP motor, however the manual from the Jet website says it has a 1/3 HP motor like the old JDP-12. Can you confirm this is in fact 1/2 HP?
Mike S on Aug 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The motor nameplate says 1/2 hp. Sorry it took so long to respond - been out of town for the last few days.
is there a way to turn off the screen displaying rpms ?
Mike R on May 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There isn't. I bought an inexpensive remote controlled plug and turn the unit on with the remote. Having the display in all the time will shorten the life of the board.
What is the height dimension? Overall dimensions are not listed as far as I can tell.
Michael on Jul 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Overall height is 37". Perhaps also of interest, the height from bottom of base to bottom of chuck is 21.5" and base is 10" wide x 16" deep.
What are they referring to when they talk about a lift gate?
Rosie on Jun 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: A truck with a lift on the back to load/unload heavy equipment. This doesn't need a lift gate, not that heavy.
what is the minimum diameter drill bit for the 5/8"chuck?
Scott D on May 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can use a 1/16" bit or smaller if you have one.
Can anybody tell the difference between this Jet DP and the WEN 4214?

As far as I can tell, except for the colors, they are identical right down to all the knobs and even the chuck key holder.
GEORGE K on Jul 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The speed control handle is longer on the Jet. Doesn't sound like a big deal but the short handle on my Wen makes speed adjustment harder than it should be. As far as any run-out difference, I doubt it. Like the Wen, the lowest speed on the Jet is still too high for drilling larger holes in metals or for using larger Forstner bits on harder woods. That said, at the 530rpm speed, I used a router bit to bore a 1-5/8" hole thru 1/4" solid aluminum plate (scary job that I don't ever want to have to repeat). The chuck slipped slightly a few times but got the job done and it's (so far) stayed tight for other drilling. I'm very pleased and the Jet should be every bit as good or even better than the Wen, especially if Jet made some internal engineering changes of their own.

BEST ANSWER: All of these tools are made in Taiwan, to very strict Quality Control standards of Jet/Powermatic. They are of very high quality. For a number of reasons, there aren't many power tools currently made in the USA, although some are assembled here. Perhaps this will change in the future.

How deep a hole can I drill ?
Ron B on Feb 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The max distance from the spindle to the table is 17", in that space you will have your drill bit and the material you are drilling through. So it will depend on the length of your drill bit.
Are the RPM slow enough to drill 4 inch holes?
Hammerhead on Feb 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have not had the opportunity to drill 4" holes. However, I have drilled 3" holes into 3/16" thick metal and the drill worked fine. I believe it's going to depend on what you're drilling into. It should work well on hardwoods also.

tom f on Oct 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi tom, I'm not clear on what you mean by safety clearance's? I mean obviously you don't want to have loose clothing on or anything nearby that may get caught up in the operation of the machine while in use. Could you clarify? Dave
I forgot something on my first question so here is the revised question: Will this drill (JWDP-12) drill a 3 1/2 inch hole 3/4 inch deep in a variety of hardwoods USING A FORSTNER BIT? Does it have the power to do this over and over to make holes for clock inserts?
