Laguna Revo 12|16 Midi Lathe

Premium features in a space-saving package—an ideal lathe for spindles up to 15-1/2'', and bowls up to 12-1/2''.

Rating:

Laguna's REVO 12|16 Midi Lathe bristles with premium features in a space-saving package. A turn of its whisper-quiet speed dial achieves speed adjustments with ease. To shift between the coarse speed ranges, simply open the magnetic belt cover doors, flip the smooth cam-action lever and slide the belt to another set of pulleys. The luxury banjo glides easily up and down the bed and features a nice 45° chamfered edge. Pulse Width Modulation on the powerful 1HP motor ensures consistent torque at any speed, cooler running, longer brush life and 99% efficiency at low speeds. The REVO 12|16 is an ideal fit for a wide variety of spindle turnings up to 15-1/2'' long, and bowl turnings up to 12-1/2'' in diameter (16'' in the outboard mode with the optional Outboard Table, #64320, sold separately).

Features:

  • Easy cam-action belt changes for low, medium and high speeds—just turn the dial to fine-tune within each range
  • Smooth-action sealed ball-bearings are press fit
  • Self-ejecting live center—just retract the quill past the casting and the live center pops out
  • 15-1/2'' between centers; 12-1/2'' swing over the bed
  • Easy outboard turning setup with push-button spindle lock
  • Includes face plate, and drive and live centers with MT2 tapers for head and tailstock

Great lathe
Purchased it in Nov, have since turned several bowls, boxes, and vases. Absolutely LOVE it. Had a 1st gen Rikon and liked it too, but wanted greater diameter in a small sized lathe. Love the power and smooth quiet operation. Easy speed changes are + too. Bought stand, wheels, and outboard table too. Now have the equivalent a much more expensive machine. By the way, the Orange Calif store was great in helping me get everything together!

Fantastic Lathe
I purchased the accessory kit along with the lathe so I could do outboard turning. The lathe is built well and I have no complaints after using it for a few days. It is a great value and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mid size lathe.

GREAT LATHE
I turn small items such as ornaments, shakers and lidded boxes.
My old lathe did not have the power drill T holes needed for these projects. This lathe has plenty of power. I wish that I had bought it sooner instead of my HF lathe.

well made, versatile.
powerful and extremely smooth running. Love the outboard capability with the bench extension and also the variable speed. Based on my research it had the most capability and power for its size and price.

Revo 12/16 Lathe
This is a superior machine to other lathes in the Midi size. The motor control system puts this lathe in a league of it's own. It runs vibration free at any speed and so quiet it is hard to hear it run. As Laguna stated; "a professional lather for those that turn small project".

I took a woodturning class at Rockler and used this lathe to make a beautiful bowl. First ever! There were three other lathes being used and after watching the other students use their lathes I decided this was the best for my needs. And it was on sale!

On the out board side of the spindle the indexing pin is in the way when you put nova chuck on. What is the solution to this?
Ed K on Jan 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe you have to buy the extension table kit that comes with a spindle extension that allows you to use a chuck.
Does lathe come with banjo and tool rest ? If not where is it listed for purchase? (Not the extension and extension banjo)
Brent M on Jan 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes. It comes with banjo and tool rest. It also includes drive spur live center, and face plate.
What chuck from Nova is fitting the Laguna 1216 ?
rrg1964 on Feb 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The G3 chuck and any others with 1" x 8 tpi will directly thread on. Others can be used but you will need a thread adapter. FYI, be aware there is a very long backorder time for this lathe. I'm going on 3 months waiting and still no delivery in sight.
does the unit have the ability to run in reverse for sanding purposes ?
HerbW on Apr 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: yes forward/reverse is standard
The 12/16 runs PWM w/DC motor but the 18/36 uses VFD with 3phase AC motor. My question is why change as 3 and 4hp DC motors are available and the PWM is cheaper. I can only assume the VFD is better but why? What limitations will I see with PWM and finally why not VFD with 12/16?
Tapper on Mar 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Using 3 or 4HP DC motors on a midi lathe is not feasible from a size or monetary point.
PWM is not inexpensive, this is the reason it has never been used on a 12” lathe before, Laguna believes it is best solution for providing
Superior torque in the low – mid range RPM.
VFD is not an option, the cost involved for this combined with the required 3 phase TEFC motor would be impossible for a lathe retailing $799
PWM is a better solution compared to the traditional rheostat creating less heat, longer component life & better torque of course.
The PWM module on the Revo 12|16 has been specifically developed by Laguna Engineers to run the 1 HP DC Brush motor.
Does the Laguna 12/16 lathe have a forward/reverse spindle feature?
MELVINDAVIS on Jul 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes. There is a toggle switch located on the top of the headstock next to the digital display readout. Works very well and conveniently located on the lathe.
Is it made in the USA?
Dan R on Jan 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I believe the structural parts ( everything but the electronics) are made and/ or assembled in the USA. I know some of the electronic parts are manufactured in China. The quality and precision of the lathe is awesome.
The Laguna 12x16 looks like what I have been looking for but there are a couple of question my dealer has been unable to answer. Is the lathe designed as a bench top model and if so are there isolation pads to dampen vibration. OR is it best to bolt the unit to the bench?
thanks
joe r on May 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: 4 feet at bottom need to be screwed in as part of the assembly (delivered with lathe). I use it as a benchtop lathe. I went to a lathe where I felt comfortable, measured out the distance between floor and spindle to make sure my setup in my garage shop is the same. Works for me. I did not bolt it to the benchtop, the vibrations are totally minimal, unless you have a totally out-of-balance piece that would generate a lot of vibration. I actually replicated the coin-demo effect and had a coin standing on the rim ... it works, was blown away !!
does the shipper need to do anything special as it weighs 125 pounds?
woodio on Nov 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I’m not sure if this will answer your question. It came in a sealed cardboard box fitted with styrofoam inserts. It took two adults to lift it out of the box and put it on a workbench. (A sturdy stand would also do.)
does the outboard kit come with the spindle extension ?
jim p on Mar 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The kit I bought did come with the adapter but can't remember where I got mine from. Ordered it before i ordered the Revo 12/16 Love the lathe have been spending a lot of time in the shop
Will the Oneway Talon Chuck thread right on or do I need the insert? Thank you, Bill
Hazmat_hauler on Aug 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not sure about that chuck but my Nova threads on with no adaptor, like the lathe real well.
I just moved into a sixty year old house with a shop attached. The house is grounded with rod outside but the receptacles in the wall only have a two prong plug. ie you have to use an adapter. Is this going to create problems with the DC motor if I use the appropriate circuit breaker?
Gaylon L on Mar 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: If you are completely certain that the outlet is wired correctly and if you attach the ground wire on the adaptor to ground, I see no problem. But if you are not certain if the wiring is correct, call your friendly electrician and have him check it. A small expense now will save many dollars later.
What else do I need to add to turn pens. On this lathe?
kevin w on Jan 22, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I bought the pen turning out from Rockler with the MT2 end. It's been great!
